That is a very reasonable repair bill for a vehicle of that mileage. Aside from the wear on the stabilizer bar (also very reasonable), I would expect there to be more engine, suspension wear on any vehicle with that kind of mileage.

That said, components like brakes, exhaust, HVAC, and electronics are not propotional to mileage in wear and more to hours of use. Would you say your HVAC system was in AUTO mode for most of those miles? That may better support the argument for a replacement in 2 years.

As the SHAWD is the most unique Honda feature to our RL (moreso than engine & suspension designs), any noticeable wear in the SHAWD components and behavior?

Either way, thanks for sharing you 'extreme use RL' findings. I find it comforting to see an RL holding up well. I would hope that kind of repair bill post warranty is typical for us slow pokes.

This is a VERY COMMON known issue on the 2005 RL's.

There have been a couple threads about the A/C going out already.

I myself had the same exact problem shortly after buying the car and returning from Florida. The dealer said that the problem was the AC clutch & stator assembly was defective. The worse part is that it took Acura over 3 WEEKS to get the parts in, and this was right in the middle of the HOT summer last year.

It's a shame you were not in warranty as I was.

Cool

Interesting. If it is a known issue on the 2005 models, is there a TSB for it? If so, there might be some partial compensation from Acura for the AC replacement.

I have had components fail after warranty period that I was able to get partial refund for the repair bill. But it was up to me to do the research and present it to the manufacturer. Dealer's typically will not offer to mediate out of warranty repairs.

I spoke with the Acura service center in Torrance and was told repeatedly that they were unaware of any issues with the A/C problem on the 2005 RL's. Neither was the dealer. Mind you, this was last year, so things may have changed by now.

Rest assured, with all the people on THIS board reporting the same problem, Acura must know about it. If they tell you anything else, either they are blind to the fact, or flat out lying.

What is the Acura Service Center? Is this other than the dealer? Do they actually know technical answers?

Those miles are truely impressive for an 05. Does your car still have that new car feel?

Yes, I usually have HVAC set to auto. I guess that led to the "early" demise of the clutch and stator. I thought I'd run into more problems by now, but no. $1000 for 2 years of hard driving and the HVAC set to "Auto," that's not too bad.

Acura has been pretty good at standing behind their product. They took care of some bubbled paint under the rear spoiler when it was clearly out of warranty at 130K. Plus, I always have a free loaner, like a TL, MDX or RSX.

I haven't had any problems or change with the SHAWD since I took delivery 2 years ago. I'm in my car a lot and I would know if something was getting sloppy or loose, much like my ex-girlfriend, I digress, sorry. I do change the fluids in the transmission and diff's every 30 - 50K or so.

I'm a big fan of Mobile One Synthetic engine oil and Fram X2 Extended Guard oil filters. Some people don't like Fram, but I've never had to replace an engine, yet. I had over 300K on an old RL using regular engine oil and the normal Fram filters. It's all about changing fluids on a regular basis.

By the way, the rear brake pads are still original.

Wow. amazing mileage. Sorry to hear about the $1K bill for something that might be a known issue. I thought I was racking up the miles with 37500 in almost 2 years...

Great to hear the car is running great. Quick question on the overall engine response to throttle. Have you noticed any loss in acceleration or power. Just curious.

It hasn't changed at all. My friends are always amazed at how quick and like new it runs.

WOW!!!!!!!

That's a lot of miles. You average a little over 200 miles per day. I thought I drove a lot. My RL would be 2 years this coming September and it has about 73000 miles.

Goes to show you.....J series engines are bulletproof.

Sounds like the tranny is almost bulletproof if it's gotten that far without failure (some have had to have driveshaft replacements).

Given Acura's recent history with trannies, that's a good thing.
