06 Lifter Problem

Just picked up our 06 RL in Bayshore Silver. Absolutely love this car! Wow, does this car fly up hills, its like it has 4 claws grabbing for pavement - it wants to go! Good mileage too. The car has just rolled over 45,000 miles.

The wife drove in the driveway this evening and I heard a lifter making some noise. I could add some Marvel Mystery Oil and see if that will clear it up. It has had nothing but Mobil 1 since the first oil change, so I don't get why this is happening unless the lifter is bad to start with.

Are there issues with lifters in this model? First time I heard a lifter in an Acura making noise. Suggestions on what to do please. I plan on making an appointment next week to get the A1 service taken care of (they better balance those tires better than good for 80 mph) Thank you for your suggestions...

I think you mean "Lakeshore silver"; and no, I haven't heard of anyone complaining about the lifters. My '06 has just over 45K miles and it has been rock solid since day one.

I wouldn't try to get rid of the noise because you want the service tech to hear it when you bring the car in.

No previously reported lifter problems in this car. Robarsan gives solid advice.

I will set an appointment with the dealer next week and report back on what I find out. It is unusual to have a lifter noise in an Acura. Our 97 has never had this issue. Most likely the warranty will cover it and take a couple days in the shop to resolve it if new lifters are in order to be replaced.

Does this car have lifters? Seems like a crazy question because I read in the service manual when I did a service that the valves have to be adjusted if they are noisey.Must be a typo from years ago?

And there probably never will be, as this is an overhead cam engine- no lifters. There is a roller rocker arm that ties the lobe on the camshaft directly to the valve stem. There is an adjusting nut at the point where the stem meets the rocker arm. If there is too much play, you will get valve train noise. It will sound similar to a collapsed hydraulic lifter in a more tradition "V" engine, but not nearly as loud.

Be glad you do not have a 2007-2009 Lexus LS460 or ES350......apparently they were built with defective (contaminated) valve springs and Toyota is working on a major recall......Toyota seems to be going down the same road GM did in the '80's and '90's. What a shame.

I have about 108k on my 2006 RL and engine is very quiet. My 2003 Acura CL-type S did develop a slight intermittent ticking noise after 100k but that turned out to be some minor smog device noise that was considered normal for that car.

Thank you for this informative reply. How often does the valve lash have to be adjusted? When you do a timing belt or sooner? That sounds like a major event to pull all that stuff out of there and the valve covers to get to the adjusters.

I have had a few Honda products over the years, and have never had them noisy enough to need lash adjustment. I do check them at the timing belt service, but usually find I am adjusting them to the tighter end of the spec they already fall into. (an angled set of feeler gauges makes this quite a bit easier...)
In your case, I would drop it off at the dealer while its in warranty, and just mention it sounds like valve train noise, and see what they come up with.

I will do that as there is a couple warranty items that need to be addressed besides the valve noise. I recently switched over to Royal Purple when I changed the oil/filter. I am hoping it was just tired oil that was causing the issue...we will see. I had a CRX and once I got them to where the valve lash was correct, it was just a check every 25,000 to make sure they were still tight. Thank you for the advice everyone.
