before I go and buy a replacement driveshaft I want to see maybe its not the driveshaft at all

heres the video of me on the freeway it gets louder when I step on gas and almost goes away when I let go
happends at exactly 70 mph and I belive around 35-40mph also

very loud and annoying since theres no other noises sometimes it sounds like one of those little wavy birds that run around the grass in Hawaii...

 

That could be the same sound mine makes but mine is not as loud. I can notice it when cruising and with very light pressure on the accelerator at the same speeds you mentioned. This is not the driveshaft. It is the final gear in the transmission. At least it is in mine. It has done this for over 50k miles. It is barely noticeable in mine but if I turn the radio off and listen for it I can hear it. Unfortunately my 2008 Ridgeline did the same thing since it was new. It is fairly common in V6 Honda transmissions. Yours might be worse than normal but it is hard to tell with a recording. If you can have a mechanic drive it on a lift while someone else listens underneath you will be able to confirm where the noise is coming from. You could also remove the drive shaft and go for a ride without it. Be sure to mark the location of the drive shaft bolts before removing to assure it goes back in the same way. I've been told it can effect the balance if it is installed differently. I don't know if that is true though. If it is in the transmission there is not much you can do about it. This is a fairly common issue with Honda/Acura transmissions. It isn't noticeable to most people but once you hear it once it is tough to ignore. I almost always drive with the radio on so I can live with it.

 

will it throw any codes without driveshaft?

 

It might throw codes but you can always clear them after. Clearing them in the Nav diag menu is fairly easy and clearing the OBD2 codes can usually be done by disconnecting the battery.

I also wouldn't drive it for too long with it disconnected. I am sure a short ride is harmless but I don't know what will happen if it is driving like that for a long time. Probably nothing but I don't know how the oil is moved around in the rear diff without the drive shaft connected.

 

More than likely it will trigger codes, but uncoupling the driveshaft would be the quickest way to get to the root of the sound. From the video, it sounds like a more pronounced version of what I hear at 35-40 mph on a frigid winter morning when I first take off.

 

yea i have that too. when it was cold i was getting the bearing whine in the morning
but this one is always there

 

the sound seems to be coming from under the center dash area.

 

I can almost guarantee you it is in the transmission. Mine sounds exactly like what you are describing. Yours appears to be much louder than mine though.

 

can it be because of different transmission fluid?
It seem to have started about same time when I replaced whatever fluid was in there with redline and did the 3x3 flush
I used 2 quarts of d4 and 1 quart of race fluid(forgot the name) like someone suggested here

can it be the transfer case?
or torque converter?
and how would I troubleshoot them because the noise doesn't come around until 30-40 and 70mph. I cant replicate it on a lift

 

I was able to duplicate it on a lift with mine. I don't know if the type of fluid will make a difference or not. I've always used Honda fluid.

 

ok so its really confusing

there are 3 videos on youtube with exact same sound at exactly same mph

2 of them say its the propeller shaft and one of them says its the rear differential

all 3 start whining at exactly 35mph and sound similar

Sounds much, much louder to me. And that noise won't come from the center of the dash.

 

btw yes that is a working aftermarket double din with oem navigation and heater controls already tested.

I should have mentioned that the noise mine makes goes away when I let off the gas. So if I am cruising between 40-45 mph at very light throttle and I let go of the gas completely the noise goes away. I give it a little bit of gas and it comes back.

I would disconnect the rear drive shaft and see what happens.

 

yep mine appears like that too

but now that I have the center console out I can still hear very faint whining noise at any speed
and the other guy's noise is a different camera so it might be more sensitive mic or something


but if I disconnect the driveshaft wouldn't it pretty much disconnect all the suspect parts with it??
the output shaft bearing the driveshaft and the rear diff will be disconnected. and those are my 3 main suspects

 

I believe removing the driveshaft will eliminate the drive shaft as the noise only. I don't know if the rear differential could still be the issue since it will still be connected to the rear wheels.

propeller shaft
both transmission solenoids
clean trunk carpets
another( third one) pass side front LCA damn bushings keep blowing out
keyfob
and rear bumper trims with good chrome but different color
and rear engine mount
for 340 total

will be replacing the driveshaft in a few days and the transmission solenoids
will see if fixed the whining noise
it actually slide out very easy through the front.just make sure you use cardboard to slide on so the carbon flubber doesnt get damaged

 

That's exactly what my 08 sounded like when the center bearing on the driveshaft went. I had the whistle in the morning under light acceleration when the car was cold which went away after it warmed up. Then in the afternoon I had your sound at highway speeds. Both were remedied by driveshaft replacement.

 

I have this same whine. 07 tech, It is the trans in this case and mine. I chased this whine years ago, dealer replaced rear diff under warranty, still whines. Only at about 65 70mph, radio off, you have to almost try and listen for it. I drive a lot with radio off, and that's when it's heard. I've gotten use to it, its annoying and a sad fact to these trans, just talk to a trans shop and they'll school you on this Honda type trans issue in Odyssey and some early model MDX.

Try this, when you hear the whine, downshift into 4th gear, whine goes away. Also, when you hear the whine, press the gear selector up a little bit, towards neutral, gear shifter leans on neutral, but when you put slight pressure on gear selector towards neutral, but keep it in D, the whine goes away. Whine is only in 5th gear at 70mph in my RL. I doubt the 6 speed RL trans whines but I haven't confirmed. Trans shop tech said they fix this issue all the time but it'll come back. Nature of this model trans.

All cars have flaws, it's just if you're able to accept them or not. The RL is a very reliable smooth safe ride...That has a whining trans. I don't feel like the trans will ever fail me, it's just off slightly that it whines only in 5th gear. I'm happy with my RL even with this one issue.

 

no AT wine, I have a 06 RL and two 07 TL which use the same transmission with no whine. Looks like I would stay away from that trans shop.

 

do you remember if yours was getting louder over time?
when i got the car i didnt hear it
but its progressively getting louder
and today it was getting to a point where i had to avoid driving at 70mph because it was as loud as mic feedback
i did get a driveshaft from a 64k low mileage rl so will update once i swap it out
hopefully its not the transfer case

 

i suspect its from driving hard
because i drive all my cars rather hard
