05-07 ABS/VSA modulators should be recalled- complain to the NHTSA

410,000 Odyssey's and Element's are being recalled because the brakes fail because the VSA/ABS modulators leak air into the system.

Acura/Honda has been aware of the exact same problem with the RL, TL and TSX for 2.5 years and all they've done is issue a TSB for our cars. Look at the date on the TSB.

Are '08 RL's affected by this as well?? I noticed that the date was from 2007.

I can't imagine that part is cheap at all....I'll definitely complain. I hope everyone else does to, or you could wind up with a 2-3k repair bill out of warranty...

I had mine replaced about a year ago (under the TSB). The listed cost would have been around $1200 I think (ouch).

Hmm.. I had to slam on my brakes a few days ago and I noticed that when the abs kicked in the pedal sunk to the floor. But other than that, the brakes have been working fine. Thought it might be a function of the RL's abs system.

Has anyone experienced this when abs kicked in?

what happened for me was as follows: After an ABS engagement, the pedal was a bit floaty (low pedal). Upon taking it in, the VSA module was replaced and the issue was resolved.

I note that the TSB specifies a "manual bleed" of the brakes, not a power bleed. Does anyone have a copy of the service manual, with a description of the "manual bleed", if there is anything unusual in this requirement? After two failed attempts by the dealer to properly flush my brake fluid, I will take care of this myself. I flush brake fluid on my Porsches at least 2X a year because of time on the track, using a pressure power bleeder.
I am amazed, and incredibly disappointed, in the poor quality of service performed at the dealers - especially regarding safety systems.

With all of the recent recalls, hopefully all of the auto makers will take heed when it comes to safety items. This is a critical safety item and is also very expensive.

I complained to my dealer about the "soft" break pedal a few months ago and I think this is what they replaced. The car is still under warranty and, as such, don't know how much it cost but I am pretty sure they mentioned VSA module leaking. I'm glad I mentioned it before the warranty runs out in 5 months. (by the way, it improved the break pedal behaviour a little but I'd say that my RL still takes a more pressure than the other cars I have driven so far)

My 2005 RL (60,00ish miles), recently started braking on it's own (the anti-Toyota scenario), which needless to say rendered the vehicle underivable. The pedal also felt mushy, and the brakes pads apparently are rather worn. The dealership identified the issue and is replacing the modulator, which they say they're doing under Acura Care, but I'm not sure if it would have been covered regardless. I'm still trying to get them to cover replacing the pads, as the erratic braking likely caused that wear, and they weren't that worn before. Sadly they have the documents from previous visits (in my glove box), which show their inspection results, which should prove that it's unusual wear.

I must say that it's a miracle I didn't get rear ended with this (I'm not sure if this application of the brakes causes the brake light to shine), and I'm rather disappointed that when I first called in with the issue, they could only schedule me a loaner four days later. Ultimately it happened again, so I just drove over there (probably should have had it towed) and demanded one. I'm wondering the wisdom of not recalling these faulty modulators.

So the VSA/ABS modulator was replaced under AcuraCare (glad I had that), but the "warranty company" refused to replace the suddenly worn front pads. Not wanting to pay for the pad wear due to the car's maniacal breaking tendencies, I drove the loaner back to the dealership to talk with the service manager. He seemed understanding and emailed the powers that be at Acura, and the next day I was pleased to hear that it would be taken care of.

In the end I'm disappointed with the process (including this not being addressed via recall, as drivers can have needless accidents due to this issue) but pleased with the result.
