Question Sunglasses holder

Anyone experience their sunglasses holder popping open when they go over a bump?

Almost every time I hit a bump in the road the sunglasses holder pops open. I tried playing with it a little and no luck. First oil change is very soon so will have the dealer look at it then. Was just wondering if this was happening to anyone else.

Thanks

I see another use for duct tape! Then take it to your dealer.

Onac, it's been a few weeks...any resolution?

BTW, I have two pairs of glasses snuggled into mine and no unintended openings so far. I wouldn't try a roll of quarters, though.

Hi Onac,
I have experienced this also. Anytime I go over railroad tracks a little fast or slide too much on a slick road my sunglasses holder pops open. Even if I don't have any sunglasses in there.
Have you been able to get it fixed? If so, what did you do?
Thanks

sunglasses holder

mine is doing this now, too. About 2 months after purchase. I leave it open with no sunglasses in it now, because the popping open happens all the time and it startles me every time.

I'll get the dealer to look at it, but was there any resolution for anyone else on this thread (I realize it's been awhile!)

Don't have this issue on mine, but there is a little rattle up there somewhere when I go over rough pavement... having service check it next week.

I recently had a loaner RDX tech (2014) and the sunglass holder would pop open at the slightest bump. When I turned it in the dealer said it was a known issue.

As a quick check, have someone hold/tug on the electric cable that comes out of the headliner and goes into the mirror. I had a rattle that ended up being this cable and the way it was seated

Yes, my 2014 RDX has the same problem--not only does it open when going over bumps, it continually opens on smooth roads, and usually is open the next day when I get in the car. Made an appt at the dealership to fix this annoying problem.

Took car in to check on problem and it was the spring that was broken. Dealership had to replace entire sunglasses holder. Car is under warranty and I am having no more problems with this popping open at any time.

Our RDX developed the same problem with opening sunglasses holder after about 2 years. Remarkably, both my wife and I wear prescription glasses with photochromic lenses and never ever use the sunglasses holder, meaning, we do not even open it. In our case, it is not like it had worn out... Anyhow, my local Acura dealer says this is a fairly common problem. They also told me that Acura does not provide spare parts to fix just the sunglasses holder, and they have to replace the whole overhead panel with switches and electronics which sunglasses holder is a part of. It takes them several hours of labor to do, to the extent that one has to leave the car for a day (or half a day). I feel lucky that the car is still under warranty, as the cost of replacement part and labor would otherwise be very high compared to the nature of the issue. One would think it is a 5 minute, $20 fix, but apparently it is not - I would not be surprised at $400+ price tag for parts and labor when the car is out of warranty, considering that Acura dealers charge in the ballpark of $100 per hour. The bottom line, if you run into this problem, get it fixed before your car runs out of warranty.

I actually got it wrong. Not sure if I can edit the previous post, so I will add a new reply. The issue was fixed under warranty. I had to sign a paper with cost for the warranty coverage that went to Acura, so that the dealer could get paid (I did not get a copy of that) and as far as I remember the cost was actually under $100, I think a little over $80. It also did not take that long. I think the dealer just counted in wait time and possible oil change into the time needed to complete the job. So it is not that bad.

Bought mine used and this started happening at 50,125 miles. I notice I can move the spring a bit and change the severity of the bump that causes it. Being out of warranty means a full fix. The consoles I have been able to find from wrecks are in the $100 range. Alternative is to create a small plastic wedge to help lock it shut which is my likely solution. Based on what I can see, hard to believe it is less than $100 to fix if it truly requires the whole unit. It would seem to be easier to pop in a new spring. If anyone has come up with better solutions for out of warranty inexpensive fixes, would love to hear from you.

I have a 2014 RDX and mine started doing this around 50K miles as well. I took my car in for an oil change today and because I did not get an extended warranty, it would cost around $125 to replace the console. The service guy said he'll try to get Acura to warranty it. Like others have mentioned, I never use mine either so am not inclined to have it replaced. Has anyone successfully taped or used velcro to keep it from popping open?

Huddle Up

I took grey colored material that matched my interior and lodged it between the holder and the side of the opening. Voila, no more popping open. The material is NOT visable from the interior of the cabin.

2013 Acura RDX 135K miles. Try this magnetic dots (.78 inches) widely available from Amazon.

4 magnetic dots here and inside the opposite end.

The magnets are weak but somehow it keeps the sunglass holder align enough so that it doesn't pop off when you hit a bump. Works great the last 4 trips on the same roads that will cause it to pop loose. Will update in a month. Good thing is the sunglass holder works normally now. Next solution is opposing velcro strip inside.

Well that didn't work. Magnets keep falling off because of weak adhesive. Went with 3M square velcro instead. Only need one pair. Attach it so that it only overlaps 20% otherwise it's too sticky and hard to open.
