Rear shocks going bad

A re-engineered part should have a different part number. Easier to keep track of changes and to replace faulty inventory. Even aftermarket companies mostly do this (even if it's adding a ###-1 or ###-A to it). That or they go by lot numbers.
Did the new shift lock fix get a different part number than the original?

Replaced rear shocks at 2400 miles
I also just went through the "shock thing". Right was clunking all last winter and the left started sounding like a loose heat shield, or rattling exhaust a couple weeks ago. Bought this last August and only have 2400 miles because it's not my main ride. I'm just starting to look at replacements and plan on test driving a SC60 today, because the wife hates the passenger seat, after driving Volvo's for the past 12 years. We'll see?

OMG...The news keeps getting better and better! I'd give you a hug right now but given my past jokes about the blond wig and the part of the car that makes you shift from gear to gear (won't name it), it is probably better that I don't offer *lol* Although its all done in good joke, I keep forgetting that sometime, my humor could be deemed offensive even though anyone that knows me would say that I am the biggest pussy cat!

I am gonna start a new post in first generation. But I wanted to post that my 2012 has a bad shock. Passenger rear. Leaking fluid. Started hearing a clunk noise over sharp bumps (sounded like a shock bottoming out on the upper mount). 22000 miles. Dealer said they don't even keep shocks in stock because they don't go bad, especially before 100k. I live in Michigan. Enough said

Thanks for the plug weather. Although the shock replacement worked out well and has resulted in a noise free ride, I would suggest that RDX owners hold out for a little while longer. There is a fix coming out in late April early May.
If anyone out there is bound and determined to do the shock swap, send me a pm and I'll provide the part numbers for the shocks and the install kit along with some install tips.
As a FYI Acura also has a fix coming for the vibration issue that some owners have complained about. This will involve test driving the vehicle with the VCM module disconnected. If that results in no vibration the procedure that follows involves loosing the subframe bolts and following a specific sequence of re-torquing the bolts.

Sorry to revive this thread and although I can't really reveal my source nor do I have a specific date but I feel very confident that this current issue with the RDX will be resolved by Acura. Lets just say that they are aware of the situation and are not indifferent about the issue.

I purchased my RDX back in February and noticed the rear shocks were loud when going over manhole covers, potholes, etc. Now in warmer weather they seem fine? Strange, but definitely an issue. A fix would be nice.

"Did the new shift lock fix get a different part number than the original?"
I was referring to the shift lock part not the shocks.

New rear shocks/struts/dampers etc
Got a call from my service advisor and Acura Canada will replace both rear units on Monday. He says there is a different date of manufacture that they had to ensure was stamped on the new ones they received. Here's hoping!

When you get a chance, post the part number so those that are in the know can verify whether or not the part is actually different, and the confirmation that the fix has been applied
#97
That is the part number they used on mine. They are 80-90% better than what came with the car from the factory, but still not perfect. I can still get the banging when hitting a large bump in the road. Around town and on the highway, the shocks are fine. As soon as Koni, Bilstein, or KYB come out with a replacement, these rear shocks will be history.

Burning Brakes
I purchased my RDX in December. The shocks it came with have the same part number. This isn't the fix. The noise will come back when it turns cold. All you can do is wait for the real fix to be released, if it ever is.

I see that KYB rear dampers are now available for the 2012 and older RDX's through the aftermarket. I stumbled upon the link below which lists the measurements of the damper and lo and behold they are the same as the 2013. I can vouch for this because I have removed mine and taken detailed measurements and everything is identical.
I can't vouch for how the vehicle would ride with these shocks but if anyone is feeling experimental feel free to try them and let the rest of us know...lol.
Some of you may have followed my previous exploits with using the 1998 Honda Odyssey shocks. That was a partial success as they eliminated the noises completely but they are a bit too softly damped which results in the occasional bottoming out now that the temperatures are warmer.
I'd bet the ant farm that these would work pretty good.
If Honda hasn't released a fix by this fall,I'll give them a try.

This is per the Acura E-Store online:
2012 Rear Shock Part #52610STK-A03 $105
2013 Rear Shock Part #52610TX4-A02 $178
I wonder that although the 2012 and the 2013 dimensions are the same, the difference is this "special valving" inside the 2013 shock. Big difference in price. The RDX is still under warranty, so I will wait to see if another version will be released by Acura, or an aftermarket vendor comes up with "vehicle specific" shock.

Still clunking
Just took mine in for oil change at 53,500 Kms and they suggested I do tranny and diff oil changes. I grudgingly said Ok and by the way the shocks are clunking again. He made a note.
Picked it up, paid $600, and was informed that yes, they heard the clunking but as I already have the "updated" struts they didn't want to replace them as it probably won't help. They admitted they had another RDX in that was also clunking recently. No fix offered other than Acura is "working" on it.
I am pretty disappointed and I actually now think the front strut is clunking as well. I have to take it in next week for a front axle shaft oil seal to be replaced under warranty and I am going to complain again.

Which repair is the fix supposed to deal with? The strut issue?

There are two threads on this topic so posting this in both
Update: As previously posted my RDX had the clunking noise that drove me crazy, but it subsided after about 12 months so I didn't bother taking it to the dealer.
Last night my wife was driving the car and reported to me that the car was launching her over nearly every bump. It appears that the shock is broken and the springs are launching the rear of the car when it hits a bump. Took it immediately to the dealer and hopefully will have a new set if shocks early next week. I'm hoping they agree to replace both rear shocks.
I'm very surprised that this problem resulted in a complete shock failure. I'm interested to know if anyone else has experienced a failure like this yet.
Fixed: dealer replaced both rear shocks and it drives like a completely different vehicle. Smooth, quiet and no clunking from the rear.
Original, shocks were white. Replacement shocks are dark blue.

My new 2014 RDX with 7K has had the "clunk" since I left the dealership. They finally admitted 1 of the rear shocks is bad and will replace it today, but only the 1, we'll see what happens.

^^ Any updates?
I am going to call Acura Canada (Customer Relation) once again tomorrow and I will inform them of how disappointed I am with the way they handled the problem with the RDX(ILX)'s suspension. As you guys have seen me say many times, I am not as upset on the fact that the RDX came out with the problem due to insufficient testing (by the way, didn't they do cold testing?) but how long they are taking to solve the problem.
So to me, I get the impression they are not committed to solve this issue and are willing to drag this along....almost to a point where I think the FMC will occur and we'll still be waiting.
I have decided to sever my relationship with Acura for now and will try something else. No companies are free of problems, and until now, I felt Acura was different in that it cared about its reputation, but that doesn't appear to be the case.
If I am going to be dealing with a car company that doesn't car about reliability or its customers, then there many others to chose from that uphold these standards. On the flip side, they also offer cars that are sexier and more fun to drive. I will willing to compromise on sexy designs and fun factor at the expense of reliability, but that is a moot point now.

Hang in there Weather. Have you figured how much it would cost to replace your shocks like Handfiler did? Seems like it would still be a lot cheaper than a new car payment. I know this has got to be frustrating, yes I live in the warm desert and so far I don't think I've had this issue

I so wish I was mechanically inclined and able to do it but I wouldn't trust myself to do anything like that. Wouldn't you need an alignment when you replace the rear shocks?

Did they every replace your front shocks? I hear this thumping/clunking noise now on my front left when I hit small bumps. Just curious if you found out if the shocks were bad on the front as well.
Thanks!

Bad rear shocks
I just got my 2013 RDX back from the dealer. They replaced the left rear shock for the third time and also replaced the right rear, for the first time. I have 26k miles on the RDX since new. This has obviously been a repeat problem, but this is the first time they blamed it on a poor run of shocks from a sub contractor.
If there is a problem with a parts manufacturer I will Acura would be up front about it. I wonder if I should sell the RDX before the warranty expires?

Picking at an old scab here...
My '13 RDX's rear shocks have gone bad, again. They're under an extended warranty. Problem is, the OEM shocks are nationally backordered and Acura cannot give me any date when they might be available. Some Acura OEM parts websites even say they have been discontinued. Wondering how long I can ride around with bad shocks before I hit a bump and get launched into a ditch.
