Possible exhaust problem?

I just drove 500 miles or so today (8 April 26), primarily on the interstate. I noticed what seemed to me to be a gas/diesel smell with some frequency. My windows were up and my speed was 70-75 mph. To be perfectly honest, I have been smelling this from time to time, although not (until today) when I'm in the car -- usually at some other part of my day, as if the smell had affixed itself to my clothing or sinuses. This may be altogether unrelated to my vehicle. When I get a chance, I will jack the car up and look for any obvious leaks, but I just wanted to ask if anyone else had experienced anything like this.

Thanks for your time.

James Madison, Father of the Constitution and fourth president of the United States, wrote in 1822 that: Every new and successful example, therefore, of a perfect separation between the ecclesiastical and civil matters, is of importance; and I have no doubt that every new example will succeed, as every past one has done, in showing that religion and government will both exist in greater purity the less they are mixed together.

If you were dumping fuel into the exhaust you'd be getting cat or misfire codes.

I've encountered that. I had apparently gotten gas on the bottom of my shoe at a filling station and had gotten it onto the floor mat. Drove me crazy until I "followed my nose."

This has happened to me a time or two lol. It's a big sigh of relief when the strong smell goes away and you realize it was just a shoe.
