Exhaust Fumes in Cabin after Hard Acceleration?

Sup guys,

Just noticed this a few days ago. Whenever I had accelerate (regardless of speed), I can smell what I believe are exhaust fumes in my cabin. Normally triggered at 4K+ RPM when I'm moving. I hit 4k in park and I didn't smell anything. It's also at a highway speed, so not from 0-45, but above 50MPH and above 4k RPM. 95% of the time while driving I don't smell anything, it's just that once in a while when I'm a little hard on the accelerator.

Car's at just about 50k miles, 2012 3.5L tech, without any extended warranties. Anyone know what an issue might be? Is it a leak in the exhaust system or might it be something in the engine bay? It doesn't smell like burning, but just straight up chemicals/exhaust.

That's most likely the cats you're smelling. It smells like rotten eggs.

Maybe (guessing here) you have cylinder misfires. It may be worth looking at data logged with an OBDII reader to see if it has logged intermittent misfire codes but hasn't triggered the MIL light to come on. A mechanic looking at the air to fuel ratio, the fuel trims, the timing, and whatever code the ECU has logged, will be able to tell you what the real issue is. BTW, don't lose your catalytic converters because of WOTs etc.... too pricey to replace !

PS. Not sure where you are located but in some US States and all of Canada, the warranty for emissions systems extends to a lot more than the max manufacturer's warranty. So, check it out.

it maybe a venting issue.

there are vents in the trunk. check to see if the flaps are opening and closing properly.

Vents in the trunk? First time I've heard of that. Can you tell me where they're located? I googled it but no good results popped up.

@Tonyware: I have an OBDII adaptor hooked up almost all the time connected to Torque. Just ran error checking and the missfire checking plugin and both gave me no errors.

yes, all modern cars have vents in the trunk.
although, reading up on it just now, it seems as if they are just pressure vents, letting out pressure

Nah, I doubt that. I've used the same station (for 9/10 of my fillups) for the past 2-3 years. It's a high-volume 12 pump station. Always use premium 93 octane.

I have an oilchange on friday, I'm going to ask them to take a look at it and see what's going on.

You are probably right. I just had a flashback from the 03 accord. There was a service bulletin to seal the drain holes in the trunk among other things. Here is the file: http://www.driveaccord.net/forums/at...6&d=1080773336

(that's for an 03 accord, NOT for the TL... so...)

Hmmm. Well, we'll see how it goes friday morning! Hopefully it's just the cat like you're saying. Googled it, and that's a pretty normal thing so I don't have to worry at all about that.

There are plugs in the rear fenders that fall out. fresh air intakes near the plugs suck the exhaust into the cabin. service bulletin 14-032. dealers try to hand you that bs its normal. been 2 years and still messing with this.
