2013 acura rdx poor air conditioning

Noticed it hit close to 100 F here in SF bay area. With the car sitting outside it was a hot to touch interior. After turning on the A/C I realized that the cental dash vents were hardly blowing cold air. Also it takes more than 20 minutes to get the car to cool to around 70F inside. Is this normal for others?

No problem here. Better schedule an apointment with the service dpt. Did you have the recirc on or off?

No. We live in the Napa Valley where it is hot often. Good for the wine grapes! RDX has a good A/C system and it has never been a problem. Cools quickly. I suggest you take it to your dealer and have them check it out. We have 21,000 miles on the RDX and not a single problem. Purchased in July. AWD Tech. Silver Moon and Parchment interior, which may help with the heat. Good luck.

Something is wrong. I have been very satisfied with the AC last summer and so far this year. Central Florida is about as bad as it gets so you should not be having a problem.

Oddly, we've only had a few 'hot' days this year. However, on one particularly warm day with the vehicle parked in the open, it did take quite a while for the air leaving the vents to feel particularly cool. I even remarked to my Darling as I was checking all the settings and fiddling with the vents. No doubt, it was 'off' a bit, since there was no cold air to be found for quite a few minutes(as though the temps were set to 70 or so). I haven't noticed the same condition since(we've set some record lows this week); but we certainly experienced at least once that the A/C was behaving badly(as they say).

This coolish spell won't last long here in central Texas ; so we're going to keep a close eye on the A/C to make sure we don't get 'caught' on our first 100 degree day!

It's tough to document this condition when it's intermittent; I really hate the 'could not duplicate' response when the dealer service techs have a look-see. "We" need to give them as much info as possible about ambient temps, time of day, amount the vehicle was exposed to higher temps, etc.; in order for them to troubleshoot effectively. Maybe, it's just a reflash that's needed.

Hey now that you mention it, I do recall this as one observation I've always noted on my RDX.

It hasn't ben too hot here in Austin but there were a few 85+ deg days lately and I remember saying to myself that the air wasn't as cold as I expected.

It got me to think if the auto climate control was dialing some heated air for whatever reason but that just doesn't make sense.

The FSM (factory service manual) for the 2009 RDX contains a specific test for verifying the A/C output, which probably is not that different from the later models, and is also similar to the FSM test for my 1998 Chevy. At least it will give you a standard reference, and perhaps let you know if there is actually a problem with your own A/C.

The RDX test description is given in post #6 of the following link

I had same issue recently with the AC blowing air which was not really cold during warm days and the dealer changed a part to fix it under warranty.

I have a 2013 RDX that I bought in July 2012. Live in Long Island, NY and this summer so far is pretty hot and humid. Have had a/c checked twice over the past year. Compressor cycles off after about 5 seconds so car never cools down because cold air doesn't blow long enough. When it cycles off I can even see condensation on the dash vents. Have it set to lo, recirculate and any fan speed. Dealer says system is operating normally so have involved Acura corporate customer service. It's at the dealer now so we'll see what they say.

I have the same problem. Do you think that the dealer I bought it from would fix it?

It has been hot here in New England this week. The A/C works great, but stays in "re-circulate" mode a lot longer than my RX-350 did. I have to take it off the re-circulate mode after a while to get some fresh air in the car.

If you put the A/C on & have the TOP VENT ONLY open it will blow INSANELY cold, but if you have the foot & top open it takes a while to cool down.

You might want to leave the top as your default & then adjust after the car cools down, keep in mind you can roll all the windows down before you get in from the keyfob if you want to cool the cabin down prematurely

I notice the climate control in 2013 RDX does not seem to cool very well. It has been set at 70 or 72 at times and i feel warm in the car even if it is not that hot outside.

You can turn the temp down or the fan up, but then it will not be automatic. Dealer said it's normal but this is the only car I have owned with climate control that does not seem to get cool based on temp set.

I may contact Acura .

Its normal for the HVAC sysetm to automatically adjust the interior temp to the setting that you have selected - by "turn[ing] the temp down". What do you mean its no longer automatic?

If you are uncomfortable with an HVAC setting of 70, then use a setting of 68 or 65. When driving in direct sunlight, even if the ambient temp is "not that hot", remember that ambient temperature is measured in the SHADE, not in the SUNLIGHT. Your car is being driven in the SUNLIGHT!

My 98 Chevy has an adjustment sensor on the dash, for this very reason, and so does the RDX. That is, if sunlight is shining on the dash, the HVAC system will adjust, and blow colder for the same HVAC temp selection, versus if sunlight is not shining on the dash. But gee, guess what? If you are driving so that the dash is shaded, because of the direction you are driving, EVEN IF THE REST OF THE CAR IS IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT, then the sunlight sensor does not work that well.

Keep in mind that the ambient temp is always measured in the SHADE, because the temp in the SUNLIGHT at the same time, can be 50 degrees higher.

Also depending upon the color of your car, since dark colors absorb sunlight and heat up, the temp difference betwen a white car and a black car measured at the roof, can also be 50 degrees.

All of which is why the Acura factory specified HVAC temp test, is to be performed in the SHADE. Have you performed this simple HVAC performance test, to actually deterine if your RDX is within the factory spec, before going to the dealer?
