iPod problem

I had my iPod connected to the USB port on a long trip. It worked fine for 3 or 4 hours, but then the iPod froze. I could navigate through menus on the RDX screen, but selecting various options had no effect. I disconnected the USB cable and reconnected, but that did not help. The iPod was frozen and I could not get any response from pressing its buttons or the RDX's buttons, nor could I turn the iPod off. It felt fairly warm, though I'm not sure whether it was abnormally warm.

After many hours of no response, finally the iPod screen showed a message asking to be connected to a power supply. I found a different USB cable and charged the iPod with that one (through the "cigarette lighter" power port). After a while, the iPod responded to its buttons as usual. Then I connected the iPod to the RDX's USB port again, but with this second cable, and it worked for the remaining few hours of the trip.

So my latest guess is that the original cable may have been the problem. The second cable was thicker than the first cable, so perhaps it was a better quality cable.

Have others seen this problem? Do you think it was the cable, the iPod, or the RDX that was the problem?

Thanks,

Gregg

I just had the same problem which started this past weekend. It had been working fine for the last year but just stopped working. I tried two different cables but neither worked.

I can only control the iPod by disconnecting it from the car, changing to the music I want to listen to and then plug it back into the car.

Not sure what to do.

I don't really know, but my guess is that the ipod probably needs to have enough power charge to run on it's own. My WD Passport usb drive won't work at all because it requires usb power to serve it.

So, are you saying that the USB port on the RDX is not powerful enough to charge the iPod while it's playing (or that it does not supply any power at all)? That would be unfortunate.

If it supplies some power, but not enough for my iPod Classic (which uses a hard drive), then I wonder if it would work with certain less demanding iPods (which use flash memory).

I don't know if little or if any power is supplied. I only used my flash drive. I will try my ipod, which is the latest model, when my power drains low.

I'd be very interested in this. I have a 2006 TL with a USA Spec iPod adapter, and have been biding my time to step up to the RDX. I was disappointed to find I can't stream Bluetooth to the RDX and get song or playlist info and had decided to go with another iPod, but if I can't leave it plugged in and have it charge on its own that's yet another blow.

Well, we are going on another long trip soon, so I will be able to test it out again. I can't remember all of the details from the first trip. I know I must have started out with the iPod Classic connected to the USB port in the hidden console compartment. After a few hours, the iPod quit working. It was not immediately clear why it stopped working, but later I decided it might have simply run out of battery charge. If that was the case, I don't know if it was the fault of the USB port or the cable I was using. I switched to another cable and charged it, and then I think it worked fine. I don't remember, though, whether I charged it from that same USB port (with the different cable) or if I charged it from a USB charging unit that I plugged into the "cigarette light" power port. I will try to report back after this next trip. I will use the "better" cable and see if the iPod works for the entire trip (and thus was getting charged).

My guess (and hope) is that the first cable was the problem. The iPod got very hot as well, so that might be a sign of a poor cable.
