Stepping away with key remote

Sometimes I leave the car running and step away from the car with the remote in my pocket. The car will beep indicated the keyless remote not detected inside the car. Question is, how far can I walk away with the remote and leave the car running? Will this hurt the engine somehow? Will it shut off automatically after a certain distance, etc.?

When we bought our RDX, the dealer said the car would continue to run until it's shut off. In other words - there's no max distance. Of course, it couldn't be re-started unless it senses the fob.

You bet. Kind of scary to know it will continue running if you step away with the fob. So easy for someone to jump in and drive off in a second.

Yeah, don't drive to the airport with your wife in the pass. seat and jump out to catch a plane. After she kisses you goodbye and drives off and she hears beeping she'll just think it's airport noise. She'll sure discover it after her first stop though. LOL. The salesman tried to tell me when I test drove the car that it would shut off. I asked him if he was sure and he said he was. I said OK, I will drop you off a mile from the dealership with the key and see how far I get. If I get back to the dealership you can walk back. Suddenly, he wasn't so sure and we tried it in a big parking lot. It just beeped as I drove away and circled the parking lot a couple of times. I think he got a little concerned as to what I was going to do but I picked him and we had a little laugh about it.

As nice as these modern conveniences are, there are some drawbacks. Unintended consequences I guess.

This is a big drawback. Probably should have an auto shut-off. I can see the above scenario happening. The Wife better keep driving home without stopping where hopefully the 2nd key is waiting for use the next time.

I read someplace that an older gentleman in Florida actually left his car running in his garage when he got out of the car because he didn't have to remove the key and just didn't hear the engine running or was going to go back to the car but got sidetracked or something. Carbon Monoxide killed him. I don't think it was a RDX but it doesn't really matter. Gotta be careful with these things.

Under what conditions does it beep when you walk away?

When the engine is running and you walk away with the key fob on your person.

Oh...I've never had it do that. Then again, I haven't walked very far from it while it was running.

I guess I can just shut the door until the door hinge catches but not fully closes.... that seems to work too.

When the weather warms up a little im going to hunt for that damn beeper, lol
