P0430

Got the Check emission system message in my 2014 RDX. Pulled code and it is the P0430 Catalyst System Efficiency below Threshold Bank 2
Any ideas?
I had gotten the code replace the spark plugs recently. Perhaps those are the problem.
Or may be the O2 sensors or the catalytic converters even.
Has anyone used the Cataclean in Acura RDX?
Thanks.

Here's the diagnostic sheet for P0430. Could be the O2 sensor but likely the catalytic converter. Never used Cataclean but have read a number of reviews. They are all over the place. there doesn't seem to be any harm in trying it.

Before you go trying any aftermarket cleaning stuff, see if your catalytic converters are still covered under warranty. The federal government requires extended warrenties on certain emmision control components. I think it is at least 8 yrs/80k miles. You may be able to get them replaced under warranty.

There should be no harm in using CataClean. It sounds like your converter is still working but on it's way out. It gives you time to save money for the repair or trade it if you choose.

Let us know how the CataClean works. Good luck.

Interestingly I noticed I am getting only 21.7 miles per gallon as opposed to nearly 25 I used to get.

I noticed a sucking sound when I stepped on the gas pedal a few days before on my way home from/to work. I had no clue what it was.
A few days later the car had no power and I could hardly keep the engine running. When I started it, it would barely idle. When I stepped on the gas it would quit.
It quit on the way to work and I had it towed home.

I checked ignition, fuel pressure, etc. And it was when I had someone crank the engine over that I noted hardly any exhaust pulses coming out of the tailpipe. Hmmm?

Sure enough, I took the catalyic converter off and a slew of sand-like material poured out. Sounded like a NASCAR when I started it.
New factory catalytic converter and associated parts and it is still running (in the hands of a friend) at 22 years old.

Got the same code (P0430) again. 365K miles on the car.
I get the "Check emmissions System."
I see no difference in engine performance, mileage (26mph).
Tried Cataclean as I had done previously. No change.
Catalytic Converter is about $560 it seems.
Anyone replaced the oxygen sensor instead and gotten rid of the annoying message?
Thanks.

Looks like your catalytic has run out. He has traveled many miles and his time has come.

I went on a 1500 mile trip after the post.
Weirdly, the warning went away after I filled tank somewhere. Hasn't returned over the last 1000 miles.
Zero issues with engine performance still. I was praying it won't die on me on the highway somewhere.
I am ready for a new car.
Since I hate ALL Acura dealers, I might go Lexus RX or the upcoming GX.

Sounds like you indeed got your money's worth out of the car, that's great to hear. All dealerships sucks, for the record lol. The RX and GX both look amazing, if you end up pulling the trigger on one of those you'll have to let us know how it's treating you

Agreed. No matter what dealer they are all pretty much on the same level of bad. The Lexus cars are so overpriced for a more luxurious Toyota...

If I want to replace the catalytic converter, how do I know which one is bad? There appear to be 3 of them. Front Right, Front Left and Rear.
The code I have is actually PO420....Bank 1 inefficiency.
Thanks.

Well, this means that the first bank is bad, replace the rear catalytic converter. To clarify, the first one is rear, the second one is in front, and the third one is under the car.

My RDX is doing weird s**t these days. 381K miles now.

I still have the "Check Emission System" message. Sometimes it goes away for a while and then comes back.

One new thing is the engine is definitely louder even at 45 mph. The rpm is around 1600. It is even louder at 60 mph. Am I ruining the engine without replacing the catalytic converter?

And my gas mileage is going up despite mostly local start-stop driving. WTH?

I got the code pulled today.

Now it is P0430 Bank 2.

I need to get this resolved to pass inspection.

Bank 2 means front catalytic converter next to radiator right?

Got an estimate from a Stealership. $1700 approx.

Got an estimate from a local independent shop. $930. Is this reasonable? They declined to use my parts.

Thanks.

Here is a good used cat. Look for a shop that will take your part or replace it yourself. https://ahparts.com/buy-used/2014-ac...8aa00/371806-1

Here is a good aftermarket without a guarantee of correct working.

The report said it is PO430.
Secondary is PO420. I had this in the past.
So, I may have to replace both the front cats.
The shop said about 1800 for both.
Will get more quotes, especially from shops like Pep Boys who may let me use my parts.
Thanks.

I did the Scotty Kilmer Laquer thinner idea for the P0420, P0430.
Reset codes. They came back after 80 miles. Prior to this sometimes they go away by themselves and not come back for about 1000 miles.
I guess I "must" replace the front 2 CATs and O2 Sensors.
Ugh...this car is beginning to take a bite out of my wallet.

The shop couldn't remove the bolt/nut on the catalytic converters. They mentioned "they are melted." They would not use torch.
So, I chose to have spacers installed on the downstream O2 sensors on Bank 1 & Bank 2.
Passed the state inspection.

An excellent shop, most likely real professionals work there.

I got to try another shop.
The inspection report said "Evap Not ready." Only one not ready, so passed inspection.
What should I do for this?

It will be necessary to diagnose only when your Check Emission System, or CEL, lights up. But now the monitor may not be ready because you recently refueled and the driving cycle saw a gas vapor(EVAP) leak.

I want to share my experience, 2016 MDX, and engine light turned on after filling the gas tank. the code is P0430, which could be any part along the catalyst converter line. However, my problem went away if I remove the fuel tank cap and replace it. So I replaced my fuel tank cap. Hopefully, this fix the issue. So far so good, but I should wait longer time to verify

Easiest way to tell if it's resolved is to just keep driving and let the code reset on its own. Usually after 50 miles it'll go away.

it’s good so far. The error code is not accurate as P0430 is not supposedly for the fuel cap

I looked at the old cap and didn’t see anything obviously wrong. The new one costs $56 in the Bay Area from the dealer
