Make-shift Coin box for 2014 RDX

I just traded in my 2011 TSX Wagon and returned to an RDX. One of the first inconveniences I noticed is after living in the car the first week was tthat the drivers storage in this car was not well thought out. The center console is situated too far back for easy access while seated. When you open the console door, you have to bend around very oddly to get to the upper tray where I would expect most people would keep loose coins for tolls, drive thru's, etc.

The forward compartment is very accessible, but it's a bit big, and with an ipod in there and other stuff, tossing coins in and out quickly would be a pain.

I found a hack solution at Staples yesterday I thought I would share. It might not be for everyone, but here goes.

Get a Martha Stewart "Wall Manager, Short Caddy", which is a small plastic box. You cut a slot in it to match the protrusion in the forward storage compartment so that the Caddy fits over the top of the protrusion and sits flat to the base. You have to remove the felt padding sheet at the bottom of the storage area. Wrap up your iPod in the cord and lay it flat to the back, slap the Caddy down into the compartment and it should stay put due to the slot and protrusion. With the felt removed, the slider top should move freely over the Caddy.

Now you have a coin toss and grab spot you can get to quickly and easily without breaking your arm. You still have space to the passenger side of the storage compartment for access cards and other stuff you may need to get to quickly while seated.

Simple but effective. Grab a hacksaw or dremel tool and you're done in a few minutes.

It really does allow the door to close, if you remove the felt pad

I like that. It's better than the "zip-lock" bag-o-coins I have on the top tray of the arm rest. Plus, I can put all my "gate" cards in that box. I'm Off to Staples right now. Leave it to Martha!

Thanks for posting.

The first day I tried to find the coin tray, I was a bit surprised when I came to the realization that there wasn't one.

I used a Dremel tool with a cut off wheel to cut the slot, then trimmed off the mount in the back of the box. With the box laying flat on my radial arm saw table, I removed 1/8" off the top of the box, and sanded the edges down. Some double sided tape under the box, and then under the felt pad. This way, the box is anchored down, and has clearance. There is a second 12 volt outlet under the armrest if I have to charge the cell phone.

I took the easy way out for coins...been using an 'ashtray' lidded cup originally from our '91 Miata(since have picked up two more...one from Ford, the other Volvo)...fits in the cupholder easy peasy. Interestingly, the much smaller Volvo C70 has four cupholders in the center console

Nice! You have the "deluxe" installation. When I got more time, I was pondering doing about the same thing.

Time to kick one back for Martha!

If you have a Container Store in your area, they have hundreds of small bins and other types of containers of all sizes. We bought a long, narrow one to fit in the odd-shaped glove box and another one for the big console storage area (this one sits in front of the CDs that I have in that compartment). Both are clear, but they also come in various colors.
