How long to wait to do your first oil change?

Hi I got my 2013 rdx last week and had put almost 1000km, few people had told me that you should do your first oil change much sooner than the normal 7-8k that Acura recommends. The reasoning is that at the factory they put lot of additives in the oil for the engine which should be removed sooner rather than later.

I tried searching about this on google but haven't found any concrete proof for doing this or not doing this, anyone has any idea if this is right or should I just stick to the recommended oil change at 7-8k?

Congrats on the new ride! This is my 3rd Acura. The dealer has always said to wait for the MID to tell you. I'm just shy of 8000 K and still showing 30% life left. When it finally goes in that will be the first performed oil change.

I did the first oil change when the oil was at 50% life left.
I cant verify this but erred on the side of caution as the factory oil may contain break-in additives.

You are going to get all sorts of varying opinions just like above. Some folks will tell to change out early and others will say wait until the MID says so. If you search there is a thread where someone brought their car in early and the service writer asked them to leave saying it wasn't necessary. You need to do what makes you feel comfortable, but do you think Acura would let brand new cars run too long before the MID told yout to change the oil?

Below is a direct copy and paste from the Acura website in answer to a "frequently asked question" about why you should wait for the first oil change.

Your Acura engine was delivered with an oil that is specially formulated for new engines that have not yet developed their "natural" wear patterns and may contain minute particles from the manufacturing process.

Acura strongly recommends this special oil be left in the engine long enough for these wear patterns to develop, usually until the first maintenance interval specified in your Owner's Manual, based on your specific driving conditions.

Instead of listening to rumors or old wives tales, why don't you rely on what the engineers that designed and tested your engine recommend?
