Talking 32 mpg recently!

Hey everyone, just thought I would share some nice news about miles per gallon. I have a 2013 RDX and on a recent 800 mile trip got an average of 32 mpg! This was traveling from WI through the UP of MI down to southeast MI. Travel speed averaged around 65-70 mph on mostly rural highway, not interstate.

Thanks for the feedback. I certainly believe it.

Speaking about mileage, I notice that I get much better mileage when I watch the bar graph/gauge thing. And from what I observed on my last long freeway trip, if you're on flat roads driving smoothly, 70 mpg seems to be the magic number and 65 is probably ideal. You can watch the cylinder deactivation kick in and mileage will be above 30 mpg. But over 70 (or, of course, going up hill, passing, etc.) those bars drop fast.

I averaged a bit over 28 on that trip, but I was probably driving 75 (or maybe a bit more ) for most of it.

All that being said, I've mostly stopped watching the graph and calculating. I'm just having fun driving it like a sports sedan.

Watching that gauge will make you drive like your grandpa. But I still do it. 65 to 70 will get above 30mpg but step it up to 75 and 80 and it drops to 26-28 real fast if you don't watch the gauge and take it easy on the gas.

For kicks I reset the mpg while atop the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and coast down in neutral about a mile with no cars in front of me and no curve to worry about braking and decelerating. I started at 75mph at the top and the downhill speed never did get past 80 mph while in neutral.

I did get a whopping 149 mpg for that 1 mile stretch .

Which grade of gas did you use? It would be interesting to see if there is an impact. I have done some trips over 30 mpg using 89 octane (middle grade). Mine is a 2014 FWD.

Shifting from neutral to drive while in motion is not a good idea, at least that's what the manual says

Yeah, maybe. But his post brought a little bit of laughter to my day. And pretty darn sure you could read that manual in its entirety and not even crack a smile.
