2013 vs 2015

Hi all, I'm new here .

I received a call from my dealer today. They want me to come in with my 2013 and they'll give me the 2015 for the same monthly lease payment. No fees or extra payments other than to transfer my registration.

At first I said no because we're currently 6,000 miles under where we should be on miles and we will need those as my husband will be getting a two seater in a month. We have a toddler in a car seat so my rdx will become the car that is the family car AKA, all the miles. But after talking with the manager about the miles he said he'd up my lease mileage to 15k a year and no increase in my monthly payments. So were heading in tomorrow to talk it over with the manager.

Does this seem like a good idea?

Sounds good.....????? Just be aware that there's gonna be a model refresh next year and you shouldn't be regretting after getting a new car just before it. BTW there's essentially no difference between 2013 and 2015 cars...so why bother after all ? Just for the scent of a new car.....????
OK, I'm not being judgmental. Everyone has there own reasons. Good luck.

I was just browsing the forum and saw that. There isn't any solid information on the refresh though is there?

I actually love this vehicle. My only complaint is the lack of rear air vents. If I knew for certain those will be in the refresh I would definitely hold out. But there isn't any confirmation yet.

I was also offered the potential to get in to the demo of the 2015 with tech package. My 2013 doesn't have the tech package so it did pique my interest. He said the demo has 3000 miles. Not sure how they'd price it for me...

Yeah....uhhhh... this is one of the oldest dealer tricks in the book.

All you are doing is trading in your car . You keep the same monthly payments but for a much longer time period and they'll come up with a bunch of new fees that don't sound like much but add up.

In general this is not a good deal for you.

I'm well aware that I'm just trading in my car. When this current lease is up I planned to get another RDX anyway because I really enjoy driving it. The offer, I was told, is a shorter time period and would end when my current lease would end.

I was also told no fees other than to transfer my tag. So I'm interested if they are going to throw in fees that they said they would not as you mentioned.

I guess I will update when I get home tonight.

Very good. We're all looking forward to your update.

Before you go, explain to yourself why the dealer would do that. If the dealer is just swapping your 2013 for a 2015, with keeping the current lease end date, is your 2013 (with miles) more valuable than the 2015 (without miles)? No need to try to explain it to us, just try to find a rational explanation for yourself

I was told by the Leasing Manager (who is the guy we worked with when we got the current one) that they try to keep a percentage of Acura branded vehicles in their used lot. Currently they have no RDXs on lot in the used department. So they want mine! I figured it was an honest answer as to why they want my car back. Unless it's another ruse I am falling for.

I recognize I'm WAY under miles which makes my car very desirable to the dealer for resale. I brought that up to him yesterday and that's when he offered to give me 15k miles a year on a new lease.

I'm going to check in to the one they have with tech package also because that auto liftgate would be wonderful when Im trying to close the back and keep a hand on my toddler!

Now would be the time to get some extras to make the deal worth it like:
- running boards
- roof rack
- all weather mats
- cargo cover
- etc....

If you could get those extras for the same price might help "sweeten the deal" a little bit.

You haven't fallen for it yet - but it will get you back to the dealership.

Then it'll be "you can get this Tech for only $$$ more a month and just a few more months payments..."

If your 2013 is worth more than the 2015 - which according to them it is because they'll give it to you for the same length of time, more miles and the same $$ - then why don't they just drive the 2015 around the block a few times and put THAT on the used lot?

Dealers will never give you anything for nothing. That is what they are promising you - until you get there.

But I've got a much better deal for you. I have this bridge in Brooklyn that I'll sell you cheap...

There are three outcomes. You'll either post back here that it was a ruse to get you back to the dealership and you left in disgust, you drove out with a Tech package for more money and for a longer time period or we'll never hear from you again.

I hope we hear from you again and a new tech would be sweet - but you'll be paying for it and the dealer can say "that old ploy to get them back into the store worked again".

Well I am home.
There was no trickery involved.

I have a 2015 RDX now, same color and everything as the 2013 I had earlier today. However this lease was bumped up to 15k miles a year. After the deal was said and done I was talking with the manager and explained why I want more miles. I did not tell him why yesterday when we talked about this deal. The car is about to become the full-time family car when my hubby gets his Corvette next month. The manager then laughed and said "We gave you those extra miles because you only put 14k miles on the 2013 in 21 months, we figured you'd never use the 15k a year!!"

It was really slow today, we were the only customers there (although we were only there for an hour). I am guessing they need to hit some sales this month. I don't mind helping them out as long as I don't get squeezed in the process. They were good to me last time and they were good to me today. I asked about the Tech but decided against it because I may jump up to the MDX when this lease is up or if they call me with some type of early trade in offer again.

No money paid today. 1st payment is due Oct 23. I checked all the paperwork. No funny business on the back end either.

I forgot. There is a fourth option because this is the intarwebs...

So the dealer took your year and a half old car (albeit with low mileage for the time) and just gave you a brand new identical car to drive for the next year and a half (assuming a 3 year lease)? And allowed you more mileage per year?

Where's that turnip truck I fell from? Maybe I can trade that in there too.

Congratulations on your new ride. We know that you'll like it. Now let me understand something clearly. They gave you a brand new car without changing any aspects of the lease, including keeping the lease end date the same. Astonishing. So essentially they gave you roughly $15,000 for free. Good deal, I'd have to say now.

Not just the end of the month; but the end of the quarter. Even more numbers to hit!

IF you end up with a vehicle that better suits you(only you know what that is), then you're a bit ahead of the game.

Heck, if they would ignore the damage DW did to the right front bumper(garage door opening must have moved!), I'd consider taking your deal. I expect I'll hear from our dealer in a few months as we approach the end of our lease next summer...we shall see.

This dealership will probably give you a premium because it is "customized". I'd bet they'd upgrade you to an MDX and cut your monthly payments.

There is no monthly/quarterly/annual sales incentive that can account for what they lost on this deal. A 2013 base is valued between 24k and 27k (25 being average trade [the "normal" customer is lucky if they get "fair trade in] and 27 being dealer retail. The True Car "great price" for the 2015 is $32500, so the delta is between $8.5k and $5.5k.

If the dealer is dead set on losing money then they could have easily moved the new one at $29,999 in about 10 seconds flat and "made" over $3k over what they allegedly did here.

There is something going on here that wasn't disclosed - some advertising deal with the travel agency? A free cruise? Shrinkwrapping the car in dealer logos? Or maybe it didn't happen at all.

What we do know is that no dealer gives away money.

To clarify the lease length of my two cars.

The 2013 was a 42 month lease. After 18 months I got this call (Monday).

The 2015 I drove home in last night is a 36 month lease. My mistake for saying the leases end at the same time. We're in the process of ordering my husband's new car as well as a delivery vehicle for his business and I confused the dates on some things. Dealing with 3 different dealers, dates, vehicles, etc threw me through a loop this week.

Back to the RDX.
Its a 12 month difference. Which I am okay with because I love the car and planned to get another when the 2013 was up. It works for what we need right now as a family.

So only two things changed: the length of time (36 months) and the mileage (15k a year from 12k).

Everything else remained the same.

I spoke with my Mother in Law yesterday and she does this all the time. She'll lease a Mercedes and they call her in after 1-2 years and offer to get her in a new one. So I guess it isn't terribly uncommon.

I get that you don't believe me and that you probably never will. We didn't get anything special for this deal other than a brand new car. I don't know what to tell ya.

Sure they do. And each time they increase the lease term. Most of the time they upsell you too.

Except you're paying an additional year in lease payments. That's about $5k, so that's what this "free" deal cost you.

You're happy and the dealer is happy. He got you in the door and got $5k from you that he otherwise might not have gotten.

You and your mom can continue to believe that you're getting something for nothing and the dealer is laughing all the way to the bank. Maybe it is that Florida sun.

I am guessing you have some kind of chip on your shoulder. I don't need to take crap from some random stranger who gets his jollies by insulting others.

And so it happened.....it has to happen. But not even a change of color in paint... really...
Anyway to be fair to the OP, it's all about what makes you happy. If driving around in a new car is worth around $5000 more to you, good for you. You don't have to worry about what others think of you.
You asked for an opinion in this forum and you got one (and it was pretty damn accurate).
Enjoy your new car .

I wonder if at the beginning of the lease on the 2013, there was a "Cap Cost Reduction" payment made. This would have reduced the amount that the lease calculation payment was based on. Cars that retain their value over time, have a higher "residual value", and also help reduce monthly payments. After 18 months of payments, it was quite possible that there was more than enough value left in the 2013 RDX to do the deal, and move into the 2015 at the same monthly payment. I'm sure this same scenario will happen again after 18-24 months. Dealers love to perpetuate the leases. Once you are into "lease payments", its hard to get out of them. If you are the type of person that would always have car payments every month anyway, then go for the lease and replace the car every two years.

I never put money down on a lease because that is money that is essentially lost. Now when I have purchased cars I have put money down because I see it more as an investment, albeit a depreciating one. Not this, this is to make me happy.

For me this deal made sense because I had planned to get another RDX at the end of the 2013 lease, so I would have just signed a new lease at that point. I'll admit I can be bratty about wanting to be in a new car every few years. So far me I didn't "lose" any money. Before ever receiving the phone call I already knew I'd be in another car from the same dealer. If I planned to get another vehicle (different dealer, brand, etc) then I totally see how it would be a "waste" of $5,000.

No insults. It is just important to clarify to the other readers that you don't get a new car for nothing.

I'm glad you're happy and justified this as a freebie to yourself. After all, it is only money.

Sunkissedadventures, you are not being bratty.......my one vice is that I like a new car every 3, 4, or 5 years depending on what grabs my attention. It's called "bucket list" and i'm not leaving it all to my kids. What part of Boca are you in? My mother used to like on Camino Real near Powerline. This time of year the weather is nice down there.

You got the car you wanted at a price you can afford - nothing bratty about that!
