Your thoughts

Three weeks ago I bought a CL Type S Auto. If I would have known about this website and read about the tranny problems, I probably would have not bought the car. I called the dealship and was told that the my car had been serviced for the problem and that I was in good shape. Can I really trust these guys? The stories of these cars downshifting from 5th to 2nd gear really doesn't make me feel good. I want to take the car out on the highway but am I risking my safety? Just wanted to get some opinions.

I dont know of anyone getting in a wreck because of losing their tranny, yes it will be a scary thing sometimes but its pretty rare. Most cases when the tranny fails you will be stoped and cant go. Dont worrie about it, their are plenty of cls owners still on their 1st tranny.

Congrats on the new car!!! You will love it

Its only roughly 5% that are affected by the problem. It just seems like more when you read the site because the people with problems are more vocal than those without.

Unfortunately, those cars that have had a tranny fail are quite likely to have it fail again. Thankfully, many have had Acura replace the tranny for free, even after 100k miles as they know that if they fail once, they may very well fail again.

Acura Man, which year did you get, how many miles. You should be covered under the Acura extended auto tranny 100k mi warranty that Acura added due to the 01-02 and some 03 auto tranny problems.

There's only one other CLS where I work, an 01 driven by a 50 year old woman, and her tranny went out at about 45k miles. Car started shifting and slipping, couldn't drive it.

Fortunately I like to shift it myself and waited for the 03 6 speed.

Good luck to you, I think you will see signs before any sudden problem on the highway. Just have it checked right away then.

they now have a 7yr/100k mile warranty on the car for the trans. It seems to be happening more on the 01 and 02 models more then the 03's that i have seen.

theirs been a few cases where people were going 70-80 mph in 5th and the car just dramatically slows down into 2nd gear. I guess thats not a good thing for someone behind you, but i've only heard of 2 instances like this since i joined the site.

Happened to me 2x, the second time I thought I was going through the windshield. To the threadstarter, welcome and second, your car will be covered at least till 100K ( I would imagine, though you are not orig purchaser so I wonder???). You should contact Acura and check-don't leave it to dealer to ask.

Happened to me. Went 5th to 2nd at about 60 mph. It just slowed a lot and the RPM's raced. I just threw it in manual and upshifted. Took it in the next day. I wouldn't worry about it too much. You should be OK.

Aman, you can verify that the transmission "oiljet upgrade" was performed, by viewing the vehicle from the underside while on the dealers service lift. an external oil line will be present on the outside of the transmission case. have them point it out to you
