Worth getting new tranny for occasional gear slip?
ive been driving my dads 01 CLP for the past week. (53k miles on car)
this is what has happened to me about 3 times in the past 200 miles.....
many times it gets stuck in 2nd and wont go to 3rd. (NOT in sportshift, but in D5 mode). sometimes when driving normally, it revs really high in 2nd, but without power. as if it lags going into 3rd. and then BANG! a big thump and a sharp kick and it goes into 3rd.
this also happens in SS. when i make a hard 2 to 3 shift, say when merging onto a highway, it lags. the car will say it is in 3rd on the SS LED gauge. but the car seems like its still high revving in 2nd, but there is zero power like the car isnt in ANY gear.
if this has happened a few times, is it worth just having a gear slip every 50 miles? or shud i get a 2nd tranny in? it seems that a 2nd tranny may be more problematic than just having a gear slip every now and then.
im saying this bc i know a lot of times, ppl put in a 2nd tranny, then all of a sudden they need a 3nd or a 4th tranny! so shud i just accept the occasional gear slip for now and hold on to the original tranny, or take the car in for a second one?

man, if it weren't for the stupid transmission and the warped rotors....the CL would be a great car. I'm having similar problems myself, shifting to 4th hesitates at times, kinda rough especially in the mornings...
debating about getting the tranny replaced also...seems like opening a can of worms.

very true. once a new tranny goes in, its seems that everything is down hill from there. esp with all these dumbass mechanics at acura... ive heard all the stories.
when i used to have a 00 TL i think i had to get resurfaced rotors twice a year. but then again, talk ab jeeps.... my fam has been through 5 jeeps in the past 5 years. (two leased at a time, at all times) those things need resurfaced rotors ALL the time

I wouldn't even consider keeping even a suspect transmission in my car longer than I had to.
I had one really bad experience... That's all I needed.
Take it in and have it checked. And if they try to send you home, be firm and tell them you don't feel safe. It's not worth the risk.

This is exactly what is happening to me...I'm thinking of when i take it in for the 60k to have them look at it.

Get it fixed...
Once it starts to act up, it isn't going to last much longer. And -- it could cause you to lose control of your car if you are driving on the freeway. It isn't much fun to have the car spontaneously downshift from 5th to 2nd while doing 70 MPH with a big truck bearing down on you!

My 2000 TL with 203,000 original miles is still on the original tranny. I change ATF once a year or every 15K miles and change the external ATF filter every three years. And about a year ago I cleaned the upper and lower AF solenoids.
But recently i notice there's a delay or not shifting at all from 4th to 5th, so to cope with that, I find i have to shift manually to let it kick into the 5th. I changed the ATF a couple days ago but the behavior is still the same. Is there anything else I can do at this stage? Thanks.

Could be a solenoid (clutch or clutch pressure control) issue...maybe if you catch it soon enough you won't wear away any remaining clutch material.
Check the symptoms for flare or late shift when switching from 4th to 5th.
If that doesn't work out, look up the AV6 solution.

Make sure to get OEM, if possible.

Good question! I don't remember, lol.
If you change them without draining the ATF, just have your 'ducks in a row' and be quick about getting one out and putting its replacement back in to minimize spillage.
Just an FYI, when I did mine, years ago, I found two washers on the third gear clutch switch.
The previous owner of the car had the tranny rebuilt and the mechanic just used the same old switches and mistakenly placed a second washer on it before reinstallation.
I always wondered why the trans would hard shift 3rd when cold, before warming up, when I received the car.
When I found the second washer, replacing it with one, and replaced the switch it now has no hard shift when cold.
