tranny worry

How worry should I be about this....20% failure rate is high for any car. I want to drive the car fast on the freeway and not have to worry about the tranny locking up on me and causing an accident.

Last I heard the real number was 4% of all the 5-speed automatics.

20% is not more than 4%. Go research how many applications in which Honda used the CL's 5 speed automatic, for however many years, then take 4% of that number -there are your failures. MDX, TL, TL-S, CL, CL-S etc etc; 2001 to early 2003.

Um I am going to quietly walk away now, because I have no idea how I confused you.

So I should not be worried? When I did some research on yahoo and found a bunch of people with the transmission problem all over the net. What gets to me is how Acura will replace the ECU with a more conservative one and the accidents caused by the tranny failures.

People who have problems yell a lot louder than those who are satisfied.

It seems most of the CLs on this board have gone out. If you are going to be worried about it, don't get the car. I had mine, was worried, tranny went out once, and was acting up the 2nd time, I ditched the car and been happy since.

Honestly, Elliot....you have to phone home. I'd take an Audi over a CLS any day of the week.

What part of early 2003 ? Model year or production date? I just picked up my TL and the build date is Jan '03. Wondering if I should be worried about the tranny as well.

Actually its been more reliable than the CL ever was.

The new A4 has a good reliable record. Don't judge it by other cars.

The failure rate is no where near 20% as everyone already stated... Acura is claiming around 2%, but it's probably closer to 3 or 4%.

At the time the problem began Honda/Acura was saying there was about 1.4 million cars that COULD be affected. 3% of that is 42,000... which a low number. In a perfect world it wouldn't even be that high, but as far as industry standards go... it's average.

Just relax and enjoy the car... that's what the warranty is for.

Just wait till you hit 100k on an A4.. sure the transmission is something to be concerned with on a CL, but the engine and build will last for many years.. longer than an Audi engine...

Wow, thanks for the replies. I am not complaining about the Cls, I got it because of (top 3 reasons) Power, Nav, equipment level. I have stated this before, I got (05/10/03) my 01 CLs with Nav 3,800 miles for 23,000. Basically a brand new car..so I am not complaining. Looking forward to installing headers in a month or so, MORE POWER!!!!
