How to get new Tranny before yours fails!

After reading all the posts regarding Transmissions problems on the 2001-2003 CL's, I took my 2001 CL-S to my dealership in Cincinnati today and told them that I thought my transmission was acting up, slipping in third, and shifting erratically. They set me up with a rental and took the car. Later in the day my service advisor called me and told me the tech was able to reproduce the problems and "unfortunately" my transmission would have to be replaced. This is complete bull**** because there was absolutely nothing wrong with my tranny. I run the card pretty hard and this tranny has been bulletproof. The car had 42,000 miles on it and I wanted to make sure I got one with all the problems going around before the warranty was out or at least have it documented that I had problems before the warranty was out. Acura must be really paranoid about these trannys. What gets me is that the service advisor told me after I asked that there would be no extended warranty on the new tranny. It would still expire at 50,000 miles. He made no mention of the warranty extension to 7/70k miles. I just hope I didn't have a good tranny and am getting switched out to one of the bad ones.

I think you just got lucky... it costs Honda a lot of money to swap transmissions, they would require dealer to have a proof that it indeed needs replacement.

Heck .. I've brought my car in 4 times now .. and they want it a 5th times for various problems that are obviously transmissions related ... but always get the "we can't reproduce it - good bye"

I would check on the warranty issue. I think a rebuilt gives you an additional 30K or 3 years. That is at least what I was told when they swap mine out again.

They said the tech did drive it and got similar symptoms which I thought was pretty funny since I made them up.

Actually they told me today when I picked up the car that in the next 6-8 weeks acura would be sending out warranty extension letters to extend the tranny warranty to 7/70 and my car would be included.

The extended warranty is 7/100. I hope the dealer didn't tell you it was 7/70.

I have to echo what Flint said about the tranny being bullet proof thus far --- I've literally driven the HELL outta my 01 CLS and no problems at all. I have about 40k miles on it.

Im worried after reading all these posts about tranny issues now.... although, maybe I shouldn't be.

I was actually thinking about taking mine to the dealership on Monday with some made up tranny issues to see what kind of result I get.

Funny thing about the whole thing === Honda annouced extended warranties over 2 1/2 months ago and I have NOT received jack shit in the mail about mine being included --- aren't all 01-02 CL type S models supposed to be covered for 7/100k?

I still have not gotten anything from Acura about the extended warranty but Customer Service and now my dealership say it is coming. Who knows. Just a heads up you might want to think twice about making up tranny problems like I did. I got a new one when nothing was wrong with mine and I can tell the new one is not as good. The shifts are more harsh and it tends to hang in gears longer than it should when you take your foot off the case. The downshifting as you slow down seems to be pretty harsh especially 3rd to 2nd.

Does this extension of the tranny warranty apply to all CL's? As Im in the market for one, and I would hate to buy a used one, and have the tranny kick the bucket on me and have the dealer tell me IM SOL even if I have less then 100k on mine.

I am in the same boat as CAzima, i am also in the market for a CL, wonder (if the car does not already have the physical paperwork in it) how to go about getting the car registered or something, if ALL CL (S) are supposed to be included. Essentially it is still one of Honda's specified cars, so just because we are second or greater owners and the car has less than 7yr/100k the CAR should still qualify.
Any insight in this matter would be appreciated.

If there is some fine print that indicates only one fix/tranny to a customer, I haven't seen it.

I have a hard time believing in a warranty that says, "We will replace a failing part one time and one time only. If that part fails, the extended warranty shall be terminated.'

If that's the case, why not just have Acura toss in a POS tranny that is only good for 200 miles (at the most) and just tell people to read the fine print when the ersatz replacement tranny falls out of the car...
