can i get a welcome to the tranny club??

Its official, my tranny is DEAD.

I bought my 01 CLS with 54000 miles around this date last month and Ive driven maybe 1000 miles since then. While driving to work yesterday i noticed the tranny slip while changing from 1st to 2nd. I was only goin about 20 mph through a neighborhood when this happenend so i quickly found the nearest thoroughfair to drive the shit out of it and see if i can make it happen again. No luck. Well on my way to work this morning, while still pushing its limits, it slipped and finally started freereving in 2nd gear and wouldnt catch. After 30 yards of that, all the dash warning lights came on and d5 starting blinking. I guess i accomplished my mission.

On the bright side, my acura dealership is on my way to work and they open at 7:30AM - just as i was reving/coasting by. I pulled in and got me set up and out of there pretty quick, it was almost like they were expecting me. They couldnt arrange a loaner on such short notice so they gave a rental car from the place accross the street. So now i have this peice of crap gas hog chevy trailblazer. This thing is like driving a house.

Anyway, an advice from other members of the tranny club would be much appreciated. Acura only tells you what they want you to know so i need to make sure i am asking the right questions. The said they are installing a new transmission and updated computer which will prevent this from happening again. Ive read that the new computer is bullshit too and trannys are still dropping like flies. Im starting to regret my purchase.....

Damn, as i write this i just noticed my new basslink sittin over there in the corner. I just got it in the mail yesterday and planned a big install day on Saturday. Was all excited to have my wireless internet laptop out there in my car and follow the install threads as i work on it. DAMMIT!

Man that's too bad. A lady I work with had hers go out today too. She has an 01 CLS with 50k miles. It started slipping, etc just like yours and then wouldn't drive at all. Her son is a mechanic at a local Acura dealer. She said the dealer does not keep the trannies in stock cause they are too expensive, and they have to order it and it's goonna take a few days. I'd be mad. That's bull, they replace them regulalry, and are too cheap to keep one in stock...so much for Acura Care. Good luck with yours.

no, didnt have to pay for anything, the car was acura certified so i have a 12,000 mile bumber to bumper warranty. I hear the tranny is warrentied up 100K to combat these problems but im still looking up threads to confirm that.

They set me up at enterprise rent-a-car with a $30 dollar a day voucher. All that will get you is a peice-o-crap econobox - which all the had were neons and caveliers - so i bitched and he offered me a choice of a trailblazer or durango for $5 out of pocket. Figured, what the hell, better then the other BS they offered me. Then i remember gas prices these days. SHIT!

this whole situation just sucks!!

That sucks big time ... welcome to the "club". Membership ain't exclusive. Hopefully the next tranny lasts longer than the tires ... #2 certainly didn't in my case.

I may be next. I have 50K on mine. First was a loud clunk (my g/f thought I ran over something). Then it free revved a few times since. No flashing lights yet. Just waiting for it to go completely rather than dick with Acura saying " we can't find anything wrong with it!"

Yes, Acura sent out an official letter extending the tranny and powertrain warranties to 100,000 miles on the 01-02 CLs.
You're fully covered, don't pay a dime!

Ron Tonkin Acura on Canyon road, Beaverton. They were pretty quick at getting me taken care of. It shows that they have dealt with this many times before.

report it? Thanks for the FYI Eggplant, i didnt know that was part of the scenario. Will do.

Anyone know of the link?

Oh, and Eggplant thats about how mine started yesterday. Free-revved in second for a short stretch and then it was fine. Happened so quick i wasnt sure it actually happened. Then it was my mission to try and get it to happen again/confirm i have a problem. So i drove it pretty hard, flooring it everywhere. Had only driven 10 miles city before it went tits up. In a way, i am relieved i provoked it, because i didnt want to baby it for so long that i survive 100k and end up SOL when the tranny blows.

Hope your replacement is better than mine. The new ECM they put in with the rebuild sucks . . . 1st to 2nd gear shifts make the car feel like a 4-banger. :whatbish:

LOL.. well, in their defense... it's 3% of all 5-speed trannys (Accord, Odessey, Prelude, CL, TL) since 1999......

If it were just CL trannys it would probably be closer to 10%.

Ahahahahha!! That is exactly what I am going through..

"Did I imagine that?" Maybe I can floor it to make it do it again. Then all goes back normal. Then a day later, a split second free rev happens.....
