The 235/45/17 will fit the stock 17 x 7; however, each manufacturer is different. Toyos, Nitto, and Bridgestone will fit as some of the members will attest to. The Nitto specifically was designed to be fitted on 7-8.5" on their website; however, they are not XL rated.

Most of the 235/45-17 are not rated for a 7" rim, but BMW got away with it. They mounted a Michelin 235/40-17 on a 7.5" rim, where a 8" was required.

You should check with the manufacturer -- the Toyos have thick rim protectors and fit the stock wheels great (see sig -- I originally had them on stock rims). You will get minor scratches if you do an aligment with certain brands since the tire and wheel fit so snugly.

A 1/2" is not a big deal and Nitto and a few others mark down 7" as the minimum width for a 235/45-17.

On the other hand, if you aren't sure, call the manufacturer. Some of the dealers out there are NOT TO BRIGHT.

Some of them don't care about your safety, and will put low profile and/or wide tires on the stock rims without concern.

So what rim size would the 235/45-17 size be better for?

Btw I'm shopping for some rubber and the specs for the 235/45-17 size seems to come out closest to the stock specs. Therefore can anybody say whether the 235/45-17 can be mounted without rubbing on a lowered car (comptech springs) that has 17 x 7.5 rims?

Thanks much

Yeah, I'm getting my springs installed this weekend, just wondering if I'll be encountering ANY problems at all. Some help here please, thanks!

Someone I know liked the Toyos I have (test drove), and he is lowered. He is trying to put the 235/45-17s on the CLS with the Comptech springs. I already know that one member has rub problems with the SSRs (17x8 +48 offset).

The person I was talking to, was trying to go with 235/45-17 on 17x7.5 +52 offset wheels (HRE).

I also talked to a member that said the SSR comps (as above -- 17x8 +48) don't rub with Comptech lowering when used with 225/45-17.

The problem with all of this, is I'm talking the word of other people. The person who said the 225/45-17 works on the 17x8", is a very solid person, and seems to have a solid grasp of what they are doing.

I can say this -- the Comptech springs with 235/45-17 Toyos AND 17x8" +48 SSRS rub.

The same setup on STOCK springs, NEVER rubs on my car. So, let me list the setups that I have checked out, or others have left e-mail on:

1. SSR 17x8 +48, 225/45-17 tires Comptech springs (NO RUB)

2. SSR 17x8 +48, 235/45-17 Toyo T1S Proxy, Stock springs (NO RUB)

3. SSR 17x8 +48, 235/45-17 Toyo T1S Proxy, Comptech springs (Rubbing reported in front).

So, check items 1..3. Notice how close it is to have something rub or not rub when lowered. If I wanted to lower my car, I could just go with some 225/45-17 tires (according to my source) and have no rub.

Or, I could get so really cool Volks SE-37Ks in 7.5" wide, and probably be OK with 235s (no guarantee -- but I think so)

Finally, I am hoping to see if a member finally goes with some 17x7.5 +52 HREs with 235/45-17s, and see if that works (very expensive)!!!

Sorry, I know this is long -- but it is important to stress what I know and don't know.

You shouldn't have problems with the Toyos when using the STOCK 17x7" wheels -- they fit well (when lowered).

It is just the Toyos in the 235/45-17 on the SSRs. I had some people from some other clubs see my car at the detailer, and they couldn't believe the width/look of the wheels/tires. They look much wider on the 8" SSRs, than the do when mounted on the stock rims.

There is a table on the TireRack site that can be used to figure out how much the tire width changes with wheel width. Here is the link (if anyone cares):

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete...#rimwidthrange

(The width will narrow or widen -- most 235/45-17s have a 8" "Measuring rim" -- use the 8" figure in the table.

I hope this helps...
