Broken Lug bolt
Broken Lug bolt
While trying to remove an overtightened lug nut, the bolt broke off. I have a '97 3.0 CL. I was told by a dealership in Northern New jersey that it is a complicated procedure to replace (on this car) and would cost arounbd $170-$190. Seems steep. Any other experiences with this?
Not in this car (03' CL) but I have done it on others. It's usually not that hard ... although, you do have to remove the brake caliper and brake disk (I assume, I've never even taken the tires off on this car ... I've only had it for 6 months). You might want to try a Goodyear or simillar tire/auto repair shop. They might be able to do it for a lot less.
I actually had all 5 studs replaced on my front wheel, it cost 75 bucks for all of them with installation. The studs are like 10 bucks then its just taking the wheel and caliper off. Shouldnt take more than an hour to replace it. Dont let the dealerhsip rape you for 200 bucks for 50 dollar job.
if you're mechanically inclined you can handle this yourself for less than 50$. you'll need to get the hub off the wheel. i've never done the CL but if it's anything like the accord it should be simple. you need to remove the brake caliper. it has 2 bolts that are removed from the "back" of the caliper. you'll need something to hold the caliper after its removed. you can't let it hang from the rubber brake hose. next you need to remove the nut holding the hub on. the nut will have some type of retainer. some have cotter pins, the newer CLs have a bent cap over the nut you have to bend back out. you probably have to replace this cap afterwards. should take less than 15 minutes.
next, get a replacement stud. dealer or parts store. find an automotive machine shop. some parts stores have their own machine shops. take the hub to the machine shop and have them press out the dead one and press in the new one. should be $10 or so to press the stud. some shops will do it for nothing. it's quick & easy. just depends.
then put the d@mn thing back together. again shouldn't take more than 15 minutes.
good luck.

Thanks to all the suggestions. I bought the stud/bolt at Buy-Wise in Jersey City for $1.22. Then I went to Tuffy's Tire Center, also in Jersey City and they replaced it for only $20!!! Amazing. And Acura wanted up to $190. Thanks to your suggestions, I tried to find a cheaper alternative, and boy did I find one!
