Why are my headlights so dim???

Maybe I like brighter lights when I drive at night or maybe I’m just getting old. I recently bought a 2003 Acura TL Type S, I believe my headlights are HID, but they just seem so dim when I drive at night.

One of the first things I did was clean the yellow crappy gunk off my headlamp. The housing looks nice and clear, so it’s not that. Could the bulbs be old or wearing out? I don’t know much about HID’s

I’m tempted to switch to LED’s but I fear the focal point will not be the same and I’ll have a bright blob in front of me instead of a “not so bright”, focused beam.

Anyone do any conversion that gave them nice bright whites? Even if there’s some electrical work that goes into it, I have someone who is electrically inclined, so he can pretty much do anything as long as there are clear instructions.

thanks for the help!

Hi - You posted this in the CL section, but you're in luck since the CL and TL use the same HID setup.

I'd start by purchasing some new HID bulbs because the conversion process would be far more complicated. I recently did this (in addition to new housing however) and I think mine are plenty bright enough. Brightness is relative to the person so what I think may be fine you may find not bright enough.

Finalizing thread

So apparently my headlights are xenon and replacing the bulbs would not be cheap. However, both of my fog lights were damaged and completely inoperable so I purchased some aftermarket fog lamps to see if that would help.

The fog lights came with the ugly yellow halogen bulbs so I picked some HID lamps (Phillips H11 CVB2) in “bright white xenon look”, and let me just say, I can see again!

I absolutely love them and they light up the road really well; so much that I doubt I’ll ever drive at night without my fog lights again.

🥰🥰

I provided a photo so you guys can see how bright they are at night compared to the xenon headlight bulbs after they warmed up. Mind you, my headlights have a slight yellowing but are clear of buildup.

Happy with these Phillips fog light bulbs, now I can see at night! 🤗
