Transmission Major Fluid Loss

The other night on the way home from vacation, driving on the highway, all of a sudden the engine is revving high, and clearly the tranny was not engaging. Was close to a rest stop pulled in ... tons of tranny fluid leaking ... so something either hit the case and cracked it or something blew.

AAA got it home, I just looked at it and I don't see any cracks on the case ... so much fluid it is hard to tell what blew.

2001 CL 199,000 miles

any ideas as to what the most likely thing is that blew?

How can I test and verify where the leak is coming from?

Thanks in advance, Paul

Plug tight enough? Hope there isn't too much damage on the tranny but since these were fragile to begin with....

So I got the car up on jack stands, and it does NOT look like axles seals. on the other side of the tranny, towards the left wheel there is a plastic cover, which has tons of fluid on it. I am wondering if their is a seal underneath that? I put 2 qts of fluid in, and waiting for a buddy to come over tonight to put it in drive for me to be underneath while the wheels are turning ... hopefully I will see stuff coming out ....

I am open for any other ideas on how to detect, and other places to look.

Thx, Paul
