Throttle position sensor

My 2001 CL Type S is in the shop since yeterday morning. On the way in to work, the car lurched once, and the VSA and check engine lights both came on. It smoothed out and there was no problem, so I continued to work. When I exited the freeway and slowed down, the engine died. I coasted to a place to pull over and got it running again, but had to feather the gas pedal to keep the engine running. Pulled out into the street again, and it accelerated fine, merged, no problem until I got into the parking lot at work. Dead engine again.

The shop is telling me that the throttle position sensor went bad, and the only way to replace it is to replace the entire throttle body assembly. ~$500 for this, and I'm having a major transmission service, oil and filter change, fuel and air filters changed, etc. Total bill $800 on an Acura with 70K miles.

Does this sound reasonable? My previous Acura was traded in at 110K and never had a hiccup - it's the reason I bought this one to begin with. I haven't used this shop before, but they came highly recommended. I'm just trying to make sure I'm not getting gouged. Any/all input welcomed.

what is major transmission service? $300 is steep for an oil change, air filter and transmission fluid flush.

try cleaning your TPS and see if that works....I would use one of the online acura parts dealers to verify that story about having to replace the whole TB.........

They're completely draining the transmission and torque converter, the full 12 quarts, then flushing it and re-assembling it with new fluid. The dipstick had worked its way up to expose the hole and dirt/ash got into the transmission from the fires we've been having up here. Oil & filter change with standard transmission service and a $78 diagnostic fee (applied toward repair) was quoted at $152.00.

Which part in that pic is the TPS? I just had part #2 which is the IAC or Rotary Air Control Valve replaced.

The only other sensor on there that I saw as the Map sensor which is #13 in the picture.

Oh and I have a 6psd, the link provided was for the auto version correct?

If you look at #9. There is a sensor that is rivited on. Its on the left side. And to replace that you would need to get the whole throttle body replaced. Talk to Jorge at Maxbore.com. Shoot him a e-mail and see if he can replace it. Other then that, your going to need to find a used throttle body. $800 from the stealership is kinda steep IMO. Only thing you can't do is the tranny flush.

and I just paid for the IAC valve less than a month ago. Well I'm going to mention it to the dealership on friday when I take my car in again. At least they are looking at the car for free for me. It helps that I've got good relations with them and have been a long time customer.
