Rust problems in Northeastern cars?

Hi all, I'm looking to buy a CL-S 6 speed car. I really haven't considered any of the cars listed in the Northeastern U.S. (or upper midwest) due to my fear of rust problems. Can any of you northeasterners educate me on severity of rust issues in these cars from PA, OH, IL, NY, NJ, etc.

Never had a rust problem on the numerous vehicles I owned when living in Nj and Pa. I made sure to get the underbody cleaned often during winter when the roads were salted.

as long as the underbody was oil sprayed the cars should be ok. when i bought my car last year, i had to revamp the entire suspension since everything was seized. my car was clearly never rust proofed.

Thanks

Sounds like I need to see underbody pics and buy a 1 or 2 owner car. (Good idea for any location)

I've had some corrosion on headers and other metal parts but thats about it. Also the rear brakes can seize up if the weren't used often enough.

So, It sounds like the fender wells and inner lips are sealed up pretty well, as well as the body seams.

I just bought a 1 owner CLS6 in Ontario and despite being rustproofed yearly there's several small rust patches starting in the driver's rear wheel well (easy fixes) and 1 spot on the leading edge of the driver's door near the mirror. Other than that the car is pretty mint for an 10 year old car!

Its all going to depend on how the car was taken care of... the majority of the AZ members actually take care of their rides BUT you will find people who let the cancer eat the north east cars up.

your best bet is to get a LOT of pictures or just not risk it.

Rust on '03 CL S-Type

I just purchased a single owner 2003 Acura CL S-Type 6 speed with 93,000 miles. The car is in great shape except for some rust at the right/rear wheel well fender area. I'm looking for a repair shop that will repair it properly for a reasonable amount of money. So far, no one will touch it or charge a fortune to repair! The car has not been in an accident. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Martin

I checked out this thread and that looks terrible... I remember when I put on my eibach springs many of the nuts were a pain in the ass to get off because of the rust underneath my car. Is there anything I can do to prevent this from getting any worse?

Just got a repair quote at a well-known local body shop... about $1650 and 1 week to complete!!! They said I must really love my car, although I haven't decided yet. Do you think it's worth it?

I'm also having rust problems in 03 CL's rear right fender. I've heard that these cars are notorious for having rust there due to accumulated salt brine spray during winter.

I've searched around a few junk yards & most of the cars there also have the same rust problem. They go for anywhere between $150 to $450 for the rear quarter panel. So far, I haven't seen any piece I like due to rusty fender or high price.

My body shop guy thinks it would probably be close to $1000 for the material & labor but he left himself an open door & said it may even be more depending upon how much time he has to put in.

It's worth it if you plan to keep it for another 10 years. Mine has 175K miles right now & plan to run it until the engine croaks. Then, I'll replace the engine.

Glad I bought a car that's been in the south all its life. Mostly Texas, 6 months in Florida, and I've had the car for 13 months (in Kansas). No rust yet.
