Possible Valve problem. Help

Hey guys im thinking my valves are somewhat the problem.

my car has 132xxx and i just replaced all my sparks at 123xxx and did a valve adjustment around that time too. Once i got the valve adjustment it was quiter and sounded waaaay better.

now my problem is that my car sounds like a ticking but not as loud as it was when i needed a valve adjustment.

I recently raced a g35 when my check engine came on.The next day i cleared the code just to see if it came back. about a week later i decided to see if the check engine would come on if i would hit vtec and it did. So now like if I rev it a little above 3k the idle goes below 1k and sounds like my car wants to shut down. In the cold my car does this real bad and has shut down going below 1k. So im thinking its the valves? maybe when i had them adjusted it wasnt correct specs or loosened up aafter i ran it against the g35?

thanks !

What was the CEL for?

If the light came on when VTEC engages, it might be your VTEC solenoid.

if it was my vtec does it still make my idle go so low to turn off my car?

They may be 2 seperate problems
1. the check engine light
2. the idle going low in neutral that it turns of my car

Without the code we're troubleshooting blind. If you get another code, take it to Auto Zone and have them read it. They do it for free.

Sorry for the month late response.

I received the following Codes

P0219 incorrect shifting exceeding engine performance
P300 Random misfires
P304 misfire cylinder 4
P303 misfire cylinder 3

I suspect its the IACV but does anyone know forsure?

my car has been during off in mid shift to the next gear too btw. before it would just shut down when it was cold or when i was at a light.

should i just buy a new IACV?

misfires could be a bad coilpack. Do the RPMs drop when you shift making it stall?

i just replaced a coil pack in july and did the valve adjustment too.

the rpms drop when im at a light, stop sign, and in between shifting. I have to rev it a little to keep the car about 1000 rpms. if i dont the car shakes and wants to turn off and goes to a little above 0 rpms and then shuts off.

Oil is good too btw 10w 30 mobile 1

Who did the valve adjustment? P0219 is engine overspeed, usually when you over rev it (accidentally shift from 5th to 2nd for example). But, Ive seen that code on cars that have had incorrectly spec'd valves.

I hope that I am wrong; however, your issue may be bent valve(s). The symptoms you state in regards to your cars performance remind me of when I had bent a valve when the tensioner failed years ago. Check out the thread link below:

https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-cl-2001-2003-50/rough-idle%3Dbent-valves-my-case-446281/

A visit to a trusted shop/dealer may be in the cards to see if that P0219 'floated' a valve during the G35 race.

Good luck.

Ur gonna have a bunch of things to check, EGR valve, IACV, spark plugs (sea foam), cylinder coil packs. There are fairly easy ways to check these things, like unplugging the cylinder coils one by one to see which one is truly misfiring, or removing the parts and replacing them. To check the valves, you might have to use hook up a pressure gauge to test it. Try those things first and rule them out one by one before assuming the worst.

But the thing is my car does not sound like its heavily knocking like it was when I really needed the valve adjustment.
My friend/acura mechanic who has works on imports for years did my valve adjustments. when we did the adjustment I cleaned out the EGR valve too.

What rules out the coil pack for me is that i clear the CEL from the misfires and it doesnt come back for weeks. When i replaced my last bad coil pack the CEL would come on 15 miles later after i cleared the light.

I also just did a tune up 5000 miles and put iridium sparks in there.

so thats why im leading to the IACV being the problem because that is the last thing i havent checked

It's worth a try. Have your friend install a new IACV, if that does not remedy the situation, then have him do a compression/leak down test.

IACV is $145.

The price on them skyrocketed. I got one about two years ago for ~$80.

Check out AutoZone/Advance/NAPA/Rock Auto for one. They may be cheaper.

If the shop did the valve adjustment then ok. I have 3 and 4 cylinders misfiring. I would start with all brand new oem coils and new EGR.

Are you first owner ? Probably first owner over reved the engine you may have a bent valve. Befory you buy anything just do the compression test its easy and it will tell you if you have bent valve or not. Thats what i would first, just buy an tool from autozone or whatever and do it yourself.
