Question Intermitent Brake Light

I have a 2001 CL. The dash brake light comes on when the car is cold, especially on cool morinings. it stays on for 20 mins or so and then is gone. It occasionally pops on at other times. I have checked the brake fluid, master cylinder, and pads. My wife is afraid to drive it, any ideas?

If your fluid level is good, then the next prime suspect is the level sensor located on the cap. Could be stuck, have a loose wire, or just be going bad.

If you've had brake work done recently, maybe the lines need bleeding.

I have been having the same issue so I ordered and installed a new cap. Went a day and the light is back on. It is not every time, and not only when it's cold. I checked the brake fluid level, which is fine and I have not had any break work done in a while. ANy other thoughts???

Replace the brake light bulb(s) at the rear of the car.

I have stock bulbs, I have not upgraded to LED like others have commented. If the bulbs are working, why would I change the bulbs?

Bc when the filament heats up it disconnects and then the brake light comes on.

That may be true, but seeing the issue is intermittent, if the filament heats up and disconnects, then the light would stay on. it would not reconnect to turn the light out.

Thats not true. If the filament is only disconnected on one side it may cool off and go back in place and reconnect. Makinng it intermittent.

The dash brake light will be constant if the filament falls off or not able to reconnect.

Take the bulb out and flick your finger on the bulbs glass to see if the filament is loose. If it is that bulb is defective.

Note: I'm not guessing. I'm speaking from experience.

brake filter?

My dealer offered a free brake check so I used it to get some information about the intermittent brake light. I had informed them that I had installed a new cap. They asked if I changed the filter. I asked what filter? They said there was a small filter in the master cylinder and it could be clogged. Have any of you heard of a filter in the brake system? I could not find any information on one. Thanks if you have any info...

I think there is a fine screen at the bottom of the MC reservoir (or am I mixing it up with the PS reservoir?) which you can see when you suck out all the fluid, but it's not replaceable, nor is it likely to clog. Stealership bs...

Thanks for the info. I will call the dealership and see if they can give me a part number, seeing they said they could order it, and then see what they are talking about.

The Power steering resevoir definitely has a screen, not sure about the Brake Master Cylinder though.. It could just be the plunger is getting stuck (on the cap)

Ja, I haven't been down there in the MC res. for a couple of years now, and the one screen I do remember is in the ABS 'box.'

I had commented earlier that I have installed a new cap, meaning a new plunger as well.

I don't see a screen on the parts diagram link below for the master cylinder:

Hey!

Just picked up an 01 CL, 220,000KMs, and am having the brake light and battery light flicker.. sometimes will stay on for a few minutes. Sometimes just the brake light comes on without the battery, but a lot of times its both.

Mechanic inspected fluid, brake lines, pads, and everything was ok. Mechanically its working just fine too. They think its likely some loose wiring.. thoughts?

Im having the same problem, I washed my car and then all the sudden my battery light and brake light come on at the same time and stay on most the time. They randomly will both go off for 5 or 10 mins then they come back on. Any ideas anyone?

Replace the screen, see Service Bulletin

See the attached: Acura 2001 CL-S Brake System Indicator Comes On and Goes Off - Acura Service Bulletin B03-029.
I had the problem with a 2001 CL type S. The master cylinder filter gets oval shaped over time which prevents the fluid level switch from moving freely in cold weather. I purchased the filter from my local Honda Dealer who had the filter in stock for about $10 less than the local Acura Dealer who did not have it in stock. Also, had the brake fluid replaced. No more brake light when it gets cold. I had the same problem with an 1988 Acura Integra.
