Engine RPM up & down in park and neutral!!

Help

I have 2001 CL-S. Two days ago it started acting funny, whenever the car was put in "Park" or "Neutral" the engine RPM would rise and fall. In D5 with the brake on it would try to go like the throttle was being depressed.

Has anyone else seen these symptoms?

It's the idle air control valve. It either needs to be removed and cleaned or replaced. Do a search on the board for how to clean it. It's pretty easy.

Same thing happened to me on a road trip, my car was fine on the highway, but as soon as I would come to a stop, my car would loose RPMs and eventually die. My father recommend I top off my gas tank with premium fuel (I usually use mid-grade). I did just that and everything works fine (that was over 6 months ago). I think it was bad gas where I originated my trip. It was from a small gas station that had the pumps that have the rolling numbers and no credit card reader at the pump. I hope that helps because that is an easy and cheap fix.

Problem solved

The culprit was the Idle Air Control valve under the throttle body. It cost $149.00 for the part. There are two philips screws holding it in place. They are facing downward. If you have a flex (worm cable) screwdriver you can remove them without taking the throttle body off. I just removed the intake portion between the air box and the throttle body along with the battery and battery box. This provided enough space to get a little leverage. Make sure you get a gasket with the unit. I used a little bearing grease to hold the gasket to the top while installing the IACV (recommended by the Honda Technician), this worked great.

PS I tried cleaning it the first time, I took it off, I used carb cleaner and a toothbrush. This didn't work, so I bought the replacement part. Replaced it and it has been working since.

I hope this helps, Good luck.

Wow you can get them for $100 + shipping online. It's a pretty common problem and I'll venture a guess it's one of the most posted topics here.

I had the same problem. I never replaced it, Just made sure all the plugs were pluged it tight and hoses were good, Cleaned the air filter and took the battery off for 20 mins. So if it happens again i know what to replace now.
Acura should recall that too along with the tranny and obdometer.
