Aftermarket Intake Hum (Specifically, SRI)

Previous post has been deleted, as it was titled "WTB".

I know this issue has been beaten to death, but has anything worked other than cutting the bend off the SRI?

I'm still on the fence as to what's making this sound... My original assumption was that the tube was resonating with the unique frequency of the engine at idle, but "dampening" the tube seems to have no effect. The fact that cutting the SRI at the bend stops the sound, makes me think maybe a standing wave is being created in the tube, so perhaps some sort of disruption/resonator inside the tube/between the filter and tube will work.

Has anyone attempted to fabricate something to go between the tube and the filter, or inside the tube to disrupt the sound?

Thanks!

If the hum bothers you that much, just get the CT Icebox.

Putting anything in the tube will disrupt the flow.

Does the Comptech Icebox not hum at all? I don't mind engine noise...but the hum is unbearable...

Thanks, civicdrivr! I guess I gotta wait till I pass my 15 days so I can sell my intake, then. Any suggestions on where to get an Icebox cheap?

Its been a while since I looked for one. New is in the $200 range. Used isnt a whole lot better. Most people dont get rid of them unless they are parting out. I sold mine only because I had to.

Ah...I guess that's a pretty good reason to get rid it . I'm assuming you're still NA, though? What NA mods would be bottle necked by the intake? Or did you change the throttlebody?

Im running a 3.6l with breather mods, most importantly, an 80mm throttle body with a 3.5" intake.

An old one, put down 294/275 untuned prior to my new exhaust setup. Im shooting for 325/300 at the wheels with the tune, upgraded fuel system, another new intake setup and exhaust.

CAI and SRI makes different sounds. The hum is very noticeable with a SRI.

Maybe try an CAI? But Morgan is right, the icebox is the quietest thing next to removing the resonator with the stock intake.

Hahaha "very noticeable" is quite the understatement . I'll most likely be either buying another stock intake box, or a Icebox. Will I need to take out the resonator with the Icebox setup? I just don't feel upto removing the bumper. I probably should have used some restraint when removing the OEM box lol.

Civicdriver, you are putting down some impressive numbers! It's hard to believe it's coming from a 10yr old NA Japanese engine!

If you want a stock intake box, I have all the stock parts that Im obviously never going to use again. You will have to remove the resonator with the CT setup. The snorkel goes behind the bumper.

I didn't have to remove the bumper to get to the resonator. Just turn the wheel to the righ and take off that part of the splash shield. I have small hands and they still got scratched up. It would be easier to take off the bumper though, which isn't very hard to begin with.

How much would you let the OEM box go for? Any idea what it would cost to ship to 98281? Thanks!

If you're going to be hitting 325/300, your car would be quite the sleeper! Do you track/drag? What kind of numbers?

I will probably eventually throw the Comptech Icebox on, but I think I'll just enjoy it quiet for now with the OEM that civicdrivr is going to sell me. I was planning to buy myself a civic as my daily driver, but saw a great deal on this car (my high school DREAM car), and just went for it lol. Wasn't planning to do any mods, but I figured an SRI wouldn't hurt...I guess the hum is my penalty for being impractical lol.

Im still waiting on good axles. The last time I was en route to the track, I destroyed the cv bearings and subsequently the diff bearings.

It definitely is a sleeper, Ive caught quite a few people by surprise.

LOL literally on the way to the track? What did you do, turn on a pothole? Any idea what your 1/4 mile is? Damn, your CL-S would give my 370Z a run for sure.

Theres a bit more to the story then I led on

I drove up to NY to visit family, and it just so happened to be the same day that Englishtown was doing test and tunes. So StreetKa (s/c'd CL-S6 at the time), JBlueCL-S6 (335xi) and myself were heading out there. As soon as I got about a block from JBlues place, it started raining and they shut the track down for the night. The rain only lasted about 20 minutes and was done by 6pm. They couldve gotten the driers out and had the track prepped by 7, but I digress.

We decided to go for a bite to eat then go a some "spirited driving". We all lined up at ~40mph, honked three times, and went. I got to about 55mph when the front end started shaking like crazy. There were no potholes in the area, but I suspect the CVs were already damaged. Punching it just finally broke them.

The most recent was pulling into my driveway, first gear, ~4k rpm (I have a long driveway):

And the very first set was on the 1-2 shift showing my friends what the car could do

Though I suspect rust eating away under the damper was the cause for that one.

Those were the notable breakages. I believe Im on the fifth set, 4th since October 2011. And the current set is on its downward spiral. I was trying to organize a group buy for some DriveShaft Shop Level 2.9 axles, but I recently had to pass the torch to another member since he is friends with a DSS distributor. Though, it's taking so long to get it organized I may just give in and pay asking price for them

Wow...that is a clean break. You're on your FIFTH set!? Is this a common issue with the CL-S...or are you just the craziest driver in the world? lol Stock suspension?

I drive my car hard. Ive gone through a few different suspension setups to find what I like. The first set broke on a Neuspeed SuperCup kit, the last 4 on AMRs. The alignment is correct, I dont hit potholes, and Im not slammed.

I do have sticky tires, which contributes to the breakage. There have been a few CLs that have this same issue, but its not widespread.

The first set was OEM.
The second and third was AutoZone (Duralast?)
The remaining sets were new GSP axles from Advance Auto.

Shit axles, but they have a lifetime warranty, so when they break I swap them for free - minus tranny fluid and my time of course. I cant wait to get the DSS axles so I can stop worrying about it.

Back to the intake... OP what SRI do you have? Is it an ebay cheap one? Or an old AEM one? ...or something I haven't found yet...?

I'm looking for an intake... and might be interested in your SRI, since you clearly aren't anymore.

It's the Weapon-R Secret Weapon. Looks great, and won't hum under acceleration...but when you're coasting at low speeds, or idle...there is definitely a noticeable hum. Let me know if you want it. I'll let it go for $100 + shipping.

WPN-R Short Ram Intake Humming

So I'm sure this has been brought up a million times. But guess all air intakes make a humming noise and there is no way of getting rid of it.

Not really, just SRIs hum more. That's why the intake resonator is there to do, minimize noise.

So do all short ram air intakes hum? Wish they would have had a disclosure note saying that it hums. It would have saved me $200. Darn WPN-R!!! My nephews call my car a Spaceship. lol

I have a question about my AEM SRI. When I installed it you can see the 2 holes in the top of the resonator (in a V shape). Do these provide air flow to the SRI filter or is it actually reducing the air flow. I was going to take it out but I thought it was letting air flow to the filter so I left it.

All intakes make noise. It's just that SRIs make more noise than a CAI.

I installed mine on an 03 CLS and that humming was loud AF, I have an f20b prelude, I had an 04 6mt TL, both with short ram intakes and none hummed this bad, a little hum is manageable but this is like something-is-wrong humming, I took off the two hoses that go to the two nipples from the engine and humming goes away, im stumped

i know there has to be a way to make this crap work, i know the v6 accord guys don't have to go cold air or ice box, my TL came with it already installed, plus it had a few more mods, so i know it's possible, cold air are nice but im not a big fan off them, actually my sri has the extension to make a cold air, ill try putting that on, but if it works i will look for how i can make the short ram work, i hate when it starts raining and we have a lot of flash floods here, having to drive extra slow because i don't want to run into a puddle and suck water in
