ABS/VSA/! light

Hi,
I'm a new user at this forum, had view most of the post regarding similar problems, but wondering if I fall into the same case and if there are new solutions.

I have a 2001 CL-S with over 100+ miles. Had replaced Transmission and Axle about half a year back under extented warranty (but the warranty is now expired). About a month after the repair of trans and axle, all three of my ABS/VSA/ ! lights came on. It started going on/off periodically, and now on most of the time (it's funny that I notice the rapid change in weather can sometimes turn it on/off in the same day).

From most of the postings, it seems like might be a speed sensor problem (since I have new trans). Is the most current solution still to go to Autozone and get an ABS scan? If it is speed sensor problem, is this something simple enough to replace by myself? how?

Please direct me to the right direction (cheapest direction) as I just lost my job and can't afford an expensive repair.

thanks,

Same exact thing is going on with my car. When we ran the computer it pointed to the sensors, changed one and now need to change the other one.... I will let you know tomorrow if that eliminated the problem. I also had my tranny replaced, but I think what did it for me was the mechanic that did my ball joints.

Good luck

From: The grande.. Riverdale NJ.. Hopefully moving to skyline village in Lincoln park NJ..yes dirty jersey
you have to run the code it can be many things?
Do the lights stay on does the Check engine light blink when driving?
Does the car seem to drive different?
When I had my car it would misfire everytime I got gas and would reset itself after about 50 miles, If the coil pack is bad then the car would shake realy bad.
Worste case scenario its the trans AGAIN, just because u just had it re3placed does not mean it can't happen again!

The car drive fine and no check Engine light for me. I will get the ABS code scanned and hopefully it's a small problem like speed sensor.
Does anyone know roughly how much I should be expecting to paid for hte parts, and if this is something I can change by myself once determine to be speed sensor problem? How?

Thanks everyone.

Ya, the speed sensor is easy to get to, I think it's only one bolt to hold it on. When I had to take off the spindle to get the ball joint pressed I ran into the same problem when I put the car back together.

The sensor is a magnet that picks up the teeth on the axle and if it isn't lined up right or sitting properly in the housing it will cause the symptoms you are having.

Not sure if the part is broken or if its just not tightened down enough. With all the road salt during this time of the year it can be causing a problem.

Thanks.
Sounds like I should get it scanned to find out which one might be causing the problem (assuming there are multiple sensors), take it off, visual inspect, and put it back to make sure good connection, then go from there.
Does anyone know where I can get a diagram or step by step instruction for locating and changing the speed sensor?

thanks.

Man my memory is fuzzy. I might be thinking of the ABS sensor instead of the speed sensor.

Here is a picture of the spindle and the place where the ABS sensor connects. You'll see how if the axle was in place, the sensor would be smack up against it.

If you look down on that picture, it is the inside of the car closer to the engine, not looking at it from the outside with the tire on. The hole above the lower ball joint on the right is where the sensor would be.

Here is another pic I found, you can see the sensor hanging down on the left.

Thanks Pits200!
I wish I know cars as much as some of you guys here, honestly, I don't even know what i'm looking at. However, I will get the ABS sensor checked out. Someone else had also told me it might be ABS sensor due to the replacement of axle I had.
So the 2 possible area are Speed Sensor and ABS sensor.
Thank you!

That is what you're looking at if you zoom out. That is the spindle and is the big part that is the main frame of the front suspension.

Hi all,
I finally had the problem scanned at a shop, and they told me it's a ABS Pump Relay problem. Does anyone know about this (Where I can buy it beside dealer, where it's located, how and if it's simple enough for everyday joe to repair).

thanks,

I have all 3 lights on as well. It was intermittent at first but now they are on almost always. Local guys couldn't scan so I went to dealer today. They pulled codes 54-1, 64-1 and 83-1 and claim I need new modulator ($1617 part, plus $200 labor plus tax - they diagnosed and reset the codes for $50 but the lights come back on). Plenty of used units out there under $200 but non-dealer shops don't seem to want to touch it. I doubt dealer will install used part but I don't want to put 2 grand into it when I have 148k on the car. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Just the relay should be a simple fix. Things get complicated when you start talking about the pump itself.

I did end up changing the old pump at a local Honda/Acura specialist. The parts I got was used, and the total was around $500. Perhaps you can do a quick search on-line to see if there are any Honda/Acura specialist at your area. Good luck.

I have the same exact problem with 175K on my Cl-S. I can't decide whether I should spend the +/- $2,000 on fixing a 2001... Did you come up with any solutions?
Thanks, Kimberly

Did you get the same codes or just the lights ?
Fix the car but don't spend $2k to fix if it's like the problem above.
buy use parts, and find a shop that charges the lowest per hr for labor and has a good reputation.
