OE replacement coils?

Over the years I've seen many misfire threads where people point to faulty coils. The recommendation always seems to be to purchase Denso or NGK coils. However, on closer inspection the 2G CLS coils are made by Hitachi.

Although there was no CL Hitachi coil listed on rockauto, there was an RL coil that seemed to match up (minus the boot color):

Ordered one to test out and it just arrived:

Used CL J32A2 coil left New RL J35A8 coil right

Lastly, I will say that I've used RL coils on the CL heads before. The RL uses slightly different hardware and mounting. Specifically a stud and nut, versus the recessed hex key bolt on the CL.

RL left vs CL right

I am not sure if any of the new coils used the recessed hex nut; the Denso brand I purchased did not either.

Additionally, out of the 6 new coils I purchased; 1 was DOA and another failed recently (they produce an inconsistent idle but not enough to trigger a misfire)

I kept my old original Hitachi coils in the toolbox just case another failed; it's currently still on there and because of the number of failed denso units, I plan to buy the Hitachi coil you have listed here when the time comes.

RL left vs CL right
So 619rcr, did you decide to use these IGC0055's and if so, what kind of 'stud and nut' solution did you employ to replace the recessed hex bolt?

My experience is that the existing hardware still works as shown in the last pic of the OP.

Only one coil is new. The rest are from an 05 rl parts motor.
I used the hardware from a newer valve cover

Nice.
So it looks like #3 stud bolt 12315-PLC-000 & #4 washer 12316-PLC-000 & the IC nut below would be needed to thread into the J32A2 Valve cover, assuming they are 6X25 like the IC screw bolt socket for the 2G CL/TL COP.

yep, removed stud and nut from an RL valve cover and it threaded right into the CL valve cover. Seems to be pretty common harware amongest gen 2 j series valve covers. Even the 07-09 J37A1 has the same vc.

btw, congrats on the Suzuka Master status @zeta
