Battery Upgrade for SC guys
When my Optima 51R died after 14 months, I went on a search for a better battery. I wanted to stay with either a Gel-cell or AGM battery. Not fond of typical lead-acid batteries - corrosion and acid vapor/residue especially with the battery's location in the SC application. NiteQwill suggested an Odyssey and after some research, that's what I went with. It was tight but it does fit and packs a lot of power.
Took the Comptech battery bracket and flattened out the tab:
Attached a 90 degree bracket to give the J-bolt something to attach to:
Went with a flat piece of aluminum instead of the stock Comptech battery tie down bar. The J-bolt and the flat aluminum piece were trimmed additionally to clear the bottom of the blower.
Dimensions are Length 7.87" X Width 6.66" X Height 7.55" If it were longer, it would not have fit as it would have hit the fan shroud:

Haven't done any mods on my CL for awhile. Now I know what my next mod will be.
Very nicely done Jeff. This should go in the FAQ/FIY section.
thumbsup: But I have to say, that the Odyssey PC 1200 is a whopper of a battery. Would a PC 680 or PC 925 do?

I'm pretty sure the PC925MJT or PC925LMJT would work fine. You would just stand it up on it's edge and the poles would be on the side. The PC925's would require no modification to the battery tray. You would just need to work up a new top mounting strap or just shorten the J-bolt.
The PC1200 is a monster with 1200amps online when you hit the key.
When I talked to the salesman, he told me that these batteries are actually easier on the alternator than a conventional battery since they accept a charge much faster. This allows the alternator charge the battery in less time causing less stress on the system.
