All this talk about transmissions, paint, actuators and other annoyances has me really concerned.
My own Type S was bought in April 2000. Since then I've had uneven paint problems, constant buzzing when music with a lot of bass is playing, three (YES 3) seperate oil leaks, and just after getting the last 2 oil leaks fixed (which took 3 weeks) today I notice that the right mirror doesn't rotate down anymore. My car has less than 11k miles on it over a year and a half.
Is Acura losing its touch, is it the made in America component, or is it all bad luck.
Thoughts? We let Acura know how much we wanted the stick, how about we voice our concerns over quality.

Try moving your mirror selector switch to the center position - the one with the mirror with the arrow pointing down below it.

I've not had a single problem with mine - save the annoying rattle from the rear that I WILL fix soon. I have yet to have the sunroof problem (20k miles, purchased Sep 2000).
I love my car.

Yes, I love getting a new tranny, rotors, and pads on my cars every 12K miles.
Your mirror probably doesn't tilt down b/c the power mirror switch isn't in the center position (the one in which you select between the left and right mirrors).

Nope, switched to the middle. And still no go. Like everyone has noted I lovED my car up until 3-4k miles ago. Seems like its slowly beginning to fall apart. I've lost all trust in it.
I still have fun in it, just hate the fact that the damn thing leaves a trail of oil, that I can't turn up the music, that I have to check the actuator every couple months, and that I can't show my friends how cool it is to have the side mirrors move on their own.
Guess I'm asking for too much. Should just bought a Ford at least I would've expected this crap.

My right outside mirror stopped working right after purchase back in June 00. Turned out some module was in need of replacement. Had it replaced and the mirror has been fine ever since.
I'd definitely be very concerned about those oil leaks. Shouldn't have that on any age car except maybe a poorly maintained Duesenberg which in itself seems like a contradiction.
Good luck and rouse those guys over in service.

I think if I came to this site before I decided to buy my Acura CL I would have had some second thoughts. It seems like a lot of the people on this forum really have some serious issues with their cars like trannys, rotors, brakes, paint, windshield, etc..
Before I bought the 01 CL I owned a 97 CL 3.0 and I loved it! The car was in 3 pretty major accidents and it still drove like a dream. The only problem was that I had to replace the starter for $475!! It's because of my 97 CL I decided to get the 01 CL Type S. I've had it for 4 months now and I haven't had a single problem with it other than a squicky sunroof and my right muffler being lower than my left.
Every car manufacturer has problems no matter if it's Acura, Lexus, MB, or BMW. I have yet to see a car with 0 issues or 0 complaints. My main gripe is that Acura DOES NOT do as much for the CL as they do for the TL and RSX!!! It just gets me steamed!!!!!!!!

1) Squeaky Sunroof
2) I have this uncontrollable urge to keep my car clean all the time. This takes too much time.
I love this car!

Andy,
Have you possibly stopped by an audio shop and looked into purchasing some "Dynamat" or something along that lines? I know I had an annoying buzzing from my back dash and I had a little of this left and put it back there and it stopped that buzzing for me. Just an idea.

I remember a thread where someone stuffed speaker carpet in the gap between the rear deck and the window...
Oh wait - it's in the FAQ!

My uncle works for J.D. Power & Associates. I told him about my tranny going out on my last weekend and how I was treated by Acura. He called Honda Mfg. in Marysville, Ohio and spoke to the Quality Manager. He told the quality manager that he wants all of the warranty information and IPTVs (Incidents Per Thousand Vehicles) faxed over to him. My uncle told the Quality Manager the reason he was calling and that if he did not get an answer as to why these trannys are failing that he would publish a really nasty column against Acura regarding the tranny failures. QA Manager said he would get back to him first thing Monday morning. I will keep you guys posted.
Brenden and Rod,
Thanks for the info, I'll look into it.
Aefitchgirl,
Please keep us posted with your uncles progress. I'd love to hear what's going on with Honda/Acura.

JOE CL TYPE S with Navi is right...
I have decided not to get the car yet and see how the 02's go. My 98 EX needed brake pads by 40K and had warped rotors as well.
I am not going to pay/trade in for a car that may be giving me more headaches...
I hope Acura is listening...

I'm just bummed that after only 10k miles its spent more time in the shop than my Stealth (8years old) and my wife's 240sx(4years old) combined. And it's spent as much time in the shop as my broken down-pull to the right-feel like I'm going to roll it-Pontiac Transport. Guess American made negated Japanese company/design.
After having 4 Japanese-built Acura's( 3 Legends and and RL), and now owning my American built 2000 TL, I can honestly say that I do not notice a difference in quality. The only problem I've had on my TL was the famous moonroof rattle, which was fixed as per a TSB. My RL had numerous rattles which took several visits to the service dpt. to fix. My TL has shown perfect fit-and-finish and great paint, unlike some others in here.... So, in my opinion at least, Acura quality is as good as ever, regardless of the country of origin.
I hate to hear quality issues regarding our cars, but I think people here tend to be on the more "enthusiast" side when it comes to driving. That said, more problems will reveal themselves under "heavy testing" than just day to day driving. Rotor and tranny issues are a couple of those things. Acura should hire us for pre-production testing. My CL-S has been great for 13 months -- did have a few "panel fit" issues resolved and the sunroof fix. Think of our cars' quality as "below Japanese, but above American".

I get concerned when I read about these problems also, but I have had my car for just about 5 months- 7,200+ miles- and the only "concerns" I have are the right drooping muffler and the trunk gap.
I think this is the BEST car I have ever owned! Of course, comparing it to my previous ride, this isn't saying much! However, of all the new cars I've owned since I was 16, I would put this car in the top 5 for sure!
I think you're just having bad luck. I know all about that! I hope they fix everything for you.

Anywat, I haven't had any other problems. My old Legend had the sunroof rattle. My mom's '90 Legend has it too.
Aren't Civics built in Ohio and sent to Japan? I honestly don't think its what nationality the builders are. I used to believe that, but not anymore. think about it. If GM turned up the quality on their makes, they would probably have to pay the workers more... thus driving up the price. Hence the Corvette being such an inexpensive purchase compared to BMWs, in the same catagory. My dad's Mercedes had a tranny leak. They drove about 150 miles to pick the car up, drop off a loaner and fix the darn thing. I wish Acura did that. So all makes/models have lemons.
Remember, Chrysler, GM and Ford go for quantity rather than quality. Quantity has a quality all in itself.
Other than warped rotors which i just had turned, my car has been perfect. We all fixate on problems that we learn about on this board and overreact alot of times. I mean, how many of you have had an actuator failure ? How many have had transmission failures. Don't get me wrong, i feel sorry for our members who have had these problems but they are a very small fraction of total ownership. Just my .02, and i am definitly knocking on wood !!
Having owned 5 different Honda makes and 3 Acura vehicles, I have become a Hondaholic. I admit I have a problem, but compared to the non-honda cars I have owned, Acura / Honda cars are much more problem free.
I think my Acura CL is doing great and its a good feeling to know I have 260 hp packed into that car of mine.
I think my Acura CL is doing great and its a good feeling to know I have 260 hp packed into that car of mine.
I have had my cl-s since 3/2001. The only problem was the sunroof noise which was fixed under warranty. So far so good, great car. When I read some of the posts it seems that they come from more people who have problems and not from people who are happy with their purchases. I guess I am trying to say that the articles here dont necessarily represent the majority of owners. I find it a great source of education.
