Do you know if anyone else got money back (out of curiosity)?

I called up paypal and bitched and basically told them I was going to get the money back from them either from a chargeback or their return, their choice. They responded with this, I guess they will still pay a chargeback fee =)

Nice to hear you got something back.

I don't work for American Express, but they should probably pay me money for all of the endorsements...

If you ever have a "problem" with an "AMEX" purchase (similar to the Xepher problem...) you can just pick up the phone and explain the problem -- that you never got the goods, and AMEX will just tell you to remove that amount from your bill. They will consider YOU to be innocent and the other part guilty until proven otherwise. (At least they have done this for me...)

That's the way most credit card company's do it...when you dispute a charge, they will credit your account right away and send you paperwork to explain your case in writing. Then they conduct an investigation and pending the results, your credit remains, or you have to pay it back...

Sure, you can do that, but why complicate things...Do you know how much criminal lawyer charges to defend assault charges...My motto is hit them where it hurts the most, their wallet!

I guess I still have some "stone age" throwback M/Card and Visas. One of them (I think it is a BofA Visa I dumped) used to make me wait for 3 weeks to get a 6 part carbon form that I would have to fill out. They would refuse to "cancel" or "dispute" the charge until I filled out the paperwork and they received it.

The advantage with the AMEX (unless someone has a suggestion for a very cool new Visa or MCard) is they stop the payment RIGHT NOW, then send ME a letter saying something like, "Dr Mr xxx we have started our investigation... you should disregard any charges from this vendor..."

The bottom line is I only have to call them, and they do ALL the leg work with a great attitude -- very handy when juggling three things and the vendor is a real jerk!

BTW -- I think the keyword in your post is "MOST"...

But Eric, don't forget that they are investigating YOU as well as the vendor. CC companies get scammed from all sides..

Yes, I hear you; that is the good thing about databases when they don't crash. Since I don't burn down people, have perfect credit, and have never lied about a credit card dispute issue, I expect to be given the benefit of the doubt from my card company. And to answer your point directly, AMEX is one company that I would not want to be on bad terms with. I've heard stories from people who ran into trouble with them, and they regretted the experience. At least it beats showing up at some vendor’s door with a "Jason" mask and chainsaw...

Last time I spoke to Rock Dog his next move was going to be far from pretty and quite unbelievable. Chris if your reading this you really should give Tom his money back....

Winter I'm glad to hear ou got some satisfaction. Some of the others have gotten money back from their CC protectino. Of course this is not coming out of Xephyr's pocket. It's guys like him that gives us $1.75 ATM fee's, $25.00 overdraft fees, 19.9% interest rates.

Christopher Koncur.... I'm coming....

Sounds like you have the beginning of a good story plot for "Fugitive III -- The Pipe Murderer Returns." Hollywood is looking for a few good screenplay writers...
