Would you laugh at a SUV at the track???

First off, I really miss my cls (racing it), however tranny died and I didn't want to stick around for #2-? Anyway that said, you may all know I have traded for a 02 QX4 and I have some mods - Stillen Cat-back exhaust and CAI along with NGK spark plugs about 22% hp increase stillen dynoed. My cousin has a 01 max auto and I always rag on him about how slow his car is. We always do stop light to stoplight races me in my truck and he in the max with me always winning. His 00 SE max has 220 hp while my truck with mods is pushing about 270hp and 280tq. I know weight is the factor but, stock qx4 is about 8.5-9 0-60. My cousin is tired of this, and now wants me to go to the track so we can settle this once and for all.

My question is, Would I look stupid taking my SUV to the track racing my cousin in his max. I know some people race their lightnings and 5.9 limiteds and dodges and whatever but I am nowhere near that class of speed. A few of my friends are pushing me to do it, but i don't want to be the laughing stock of the track. I have toyo tires and they are pretty sticky and I know I can out run my cousin (he has no mods) but I want to know if you guys think this is stupid and I shouldn't be racing my suv???

:o

Hey Chikai - Have you ever seen a truck at the track? I only heard about lightnings at the track and their times. I never saw one in action before. I can just hear the announcer now

23% hp increase from just CAI and exhaust 30hp and 15lb/ft tq from just those mods is pretty amazing/extreme.

I've seen everything from Tahoes & suburbans to old school station wagons at the track(clearly unmodified). If you got it, race it. That's the motto in Texas anyway.

Might be extreme but I am taking numbers from the stillen website. I watched the install of my exhaust, and the stock exhaust had two mufflers one right after the cat and one before the exhaust exit. The stillen muffler after the cat is a huge magnaflow muffler and the y pipes and other pipes are about half an inch to an inch wider than stock and are A WHOLE lot less restictive and doesn't have the extra exit muffler.

Nashua I need some help...running down 0-60 figures for the max AUTO SE 2000 I got 0-60 in 8.2 seconds and quarter mile is 16.5 stock C&D. The same car mag got the 01 QX4 in 9.0 0-60 and quarter mile at 16.8. The way i figure it, i am only off by about .3 tics in the 1/4 and my mods should make up for that. Can you calculate a 20% increase in horsepower if my truck stock is 240hp and 265tq??????? Thanks

Unless you have that new Porsche Cayenne or an old GMC Typhoon, don't race at the track.

I saw a current generation Jeep Grand Cherokee run mid 12s at Etown during 2002.

Anyhow, your 3.5L QX4 may run pretty even with the VQ30 auto Maxima. My bet: Best launch wins it. Any chance of you guys getting this race on video??

Yeah, we have done quite a few digi cam vids of races but that was me in my CLS. My friends don't think its worth video taping plus my cousin doesn't want to be embarassed. I will definitely video tape this, that if capital or 75 drag here in MD will allow me to run my truck at their tracks.

I've seen a lot worse at the track than your QX4. I've seen trucks and SUVs racing that look like they just came from the farm. One truck ran a 20 sec 1/4.

Buying and SUV and then putting a billion mods on it to make it perform like a sports car is about as intelligent as buying a truck for the same reasons (lightnings included). No matter how much $$ you spend on it, you will never get the same results as if you put that $$/those mods on a car that was DESIGNED for high performance. Even if you lower your SUV, your aerodynamics and handling are inferior to that of a CAR. Your center of gravity will still be higher and you will be more prone to roll-overs.

Anyone who is considering and SUV or already owns one NEEDS to research the facts. Most SUVs are based on trucks and even the ones that are based on cars do poorly in crash and rollover tests. CARS are made with adequate crumple zones which will absorb most of the impact, whereas SUVs has stiff bodys which will transfer more of the impact to the driver/passenger, as well as another car/pedestrian if struck. Even your japanese SUV is subject to less strict standards than cars because it is classified as a light truck, even if its based on a car.

Well nice points, HOWEVER, I didn't buy Mods to make my truck a sports car. I bought the mods for better off-the-line and highway performance and GAS MILEAGE. No way in the world will my QX4 come remotely close to my CLS in terms of performance but, it's nice to be able to have passing-pulling power when needed.

Let me know. I'll come watch if I can.

What did the exhaust/CAI/plugs on the QX4 set you back (no install)?

Exhaust............... 329.00 (free shipping)
CAI....................178.00 (on sale)
NGK Plugs ..............38.00 or 6 bucks a plug
K&N Extreme filter......50.00
--------------------------------------
Total with install.... 650.00

I have a mechanic friend that works out in Wheaton and he only charged me 40 for install.

Best bang for buck mods i have done to any of my cars. It's funny to see other drivers in cars when I light them up off the line. Best quote from a altima 2.5s driver "I didn't know your truck had pull like that man, that is awesome!"

Anyway, my cousin is backing off seeing as how I have more than about 20 people that want to come witness this. Well see what happens after we set up a night at capital raceway.

Take it to the track. I own an MDX with a custom intake. I love pulling up along side others and going for a short run. I'm always out looking for performance upgrades. There are others like me on the MDX forum with pulleys, exaust, and CAIs. All of us already have the 3.5L upgrade.

All I have to say is 'TE LOCO'. Toyota Truck owned by a bunch of mexicans runs 11's.

I would have to say they are not embarassed.
