Window Tinting Dilemma
Window Tinting Dilemma
I'm having a problem about window tinting. Anyone with a silver CL with black interior can you tell me what percent did you get i can't decide whether to get 15% or 20%. Pics would be nice if you have any thx. If any other CLs that has black interior as well that's not silver i would love to have your opinions as well.
I don't think there is much difference between 15 and 20. Better check with the tint laws in PA first, get something too dark and you will constantly be paying fines. I know MD the lowest you can go is 50%, they won't give you anything lower if you have MD registration.
I remember getting mine done in MD, all I had to do was sign a waiver saying I knew what the law was, but decided to get illegal tint anyway.
15% is good if you don't have an issues with seeing at night or in the rain, but if you do 20% is probably going to be a little better for you.

15 or 20 percent will look best of course, but good luck driving around PA where ANY dark tint on the side windows will most likely get you pulled over.
No tint at all is allowed on the sides.
I went with the lighter 35% on the sides to draw less attention from “the law”.
And 20% on the back to keep the SUV headlight glare to a minimum.

Man you from PA just like me the legal limit is freakin 75%. Your gonna get pulled over a hell of a lot if you go with 15 or 20% I say go with 35% and you'll have a better chance of gettin away with that.

I did the same as well. Make sue you take out your rear shelf if they can't tint over the 3rd brake light.
I just checked with a state trooper on 3rd brake light laws and he says he has never seen anyone get ticketed for it, but I should slow down.
I wish I would have gone darker, but the difference in color on the sides would make it easier to know the windows were not tinted from the factory, and there are a couple asshate cops that seem to pull people over for it.

thx,
It looks BAD with a black interior and even WORSE with parchment.
This is assuming you have a rear spoiler on the car and that the window light is disconnected.
I wouldn’t recommend tinting over it if that’s your only center brake light.
That would probably get you into more trouble.

depending on what company makes the tint, its usually darker than labeled. I have 20% tint all around and 50% on the windsheild and you can barely see in my car during the day. I have gotten ticketed for it and when the cop used the tint-meter it read between 12-14%. But it really doesnt matter because at 15 or 20% your gonna get the ticket no matter what

Now some places will actually be able to get the tint behind the light and therefor the entire rear window will now be tinted.
If your tint shop is unable to get the tint behind the 3rd brake light then you'll have to remove the rear shelf below the back window so you can temporarily remove the 3rd brake light. Here's how to do it via Shawn S:
Pull the two rear cushions out. No fasteners, they just lift out.
Remove (6) bolts holding down the rear center console & seat back.
Remove the rear center console.
Lift the seatback up about 4 inches to unhook it from the shelf area.
You DON’T need to remove the rear seat back from the car.
Tip the top of the seatback forward until you see the (2) plastic plugs holding the shelf in.
Pry loose the (2) plugs with a flat screwdriver being careful not to break them.
Remove the left & right plastic C-pillar covers going to the roof.
No fasteners, they just pull off with a good tug.
They are connected to the seatbelts so they don’t need to come out of the car.
Once out of the way the rear parcel shelf will lift right out.
The brake light is held in by (2) nuts you get at from the trunk side.
Snap the C-pillar covers back on and hook the seatback back onto the shelf and leave everything out until the tint is done.
Now if you don't have a spoiler which has its own brake light on it, you may want to consider not having them tint over the 3rd brake in the rear window considering its against the law to cover up your brake light. YMMV
Hope that helps.
i appreciate you guys posting. Now the question is how many of you covered the third brake light? Even if you had the spoiler or not. Pics would be much appreciated if you have any thx
i'm trying to see at night too. Not trying to commit suicide with that dark. My friend has a Lexus IS300 with 5% double layers in the philadelphia area and front window shield 25% and believe me i can't see anything before he put the second layer on. 5% in rain sounds dangerous to me but thx anyways
heres 35% all the way around. pretty dark with the black interior

dang that back window tint looks pretty good. i mean it doesn't look that bad with the 3rd brake light not tinted. Plus i might be getting an m5 spoiler so i have to leave that untinted anyways.

Man do I love this forum. I'm looking into tinting as well and just learned everything I needed to know. I live in MD and have a silver CL-S. I'm going 35% all around (staying legal) with an M5 spoiler. In case anyone in MD is interested, I found a good tint shop that uses computerized cutting methods for thier tint. I have confirmed that they have the 2001 CL template. I just got my quote today- $179.00 for Solar Gard High Performance Charcoal tint. This also comes with a lifetime warranty.
