Why is VTEC so hated on by owners of non Honda/Acura ?

I read a post within anothe post on here from an RX-7 board, and they made statements, such as " must have been when VTEC kicked in" and we're cracking jokes at this trademark name.
Why is this, I mean it's a damn Valve Timing system, WTF is there to hate on, jealous because Honda Patented it first ? :wtf:

no because Ricers think that VTEC is there own personal little turbo they go around big talking to fast cars: mustangs,Camaro's,Trans Ams,RX7's ect... talking like because they have Vtec they have this huge advantage over everyone else. And all in all VTEC is a great thing, the people who boast about it give us a bad name.

It's because alot of ricers give the "i was loosing ground until my vtec kicked in and then i flew by him". They make it sound as if you could feel a "kick" in the HP and that made the world of difference.

The other thing is when they comment that they heard their vtec kick in and now their car became super cars or something such as "i heard my VTEC kick in yo and i was all over that (fill in your absurdly fast car)!!"

I honestly don't hear nor feel the vtec "kick". :\

and those ricers dont realize that almost every car out there has their own version of variable valve timing like toyotas VVTLI or BMW's VANOS system. Those ricers with huge VTEC stickers across their whole damn windshield just give us all a bad rep

On the DOHC-VTEC cars like the Integra GS-R, Prelude, NSX, S2000 etc., you feel a definite 'kick' when the car switches to the center-lobe. On our 'intake-only' VTEC, you can sort of hear a change in intake roar, but that's it. On the DOHC-VTECs you hear a significantly audible change in exhaust tone. It is possible on some more modified DOHC-VTEC cars, to get a 30whp jump when VTEC kicks in - hence the feel of a 'turbo' etc. On my Civic (build Integra B18C motor), the front wheels would rip loose when VTEC kicked in in first gear - sort of like how my CL does now with the turbo

Of course the guy with the single-cam Civic talking about how VTEC feels like a turbo is full of shit.

DOHC is much different. I still got my fully build B16 storked 1.8 sitting in the garage still with no car to put it in. T_T When Vtec kicked in that motor, it feels like turbo too.

Yeah my sister bought the first model integra back in the late 80's, so when i turned 16 i would take that out for a spin every now and then. For me it was very fast, it defintely got real loud and picked up in speed once the rpm's got up there. It actually sounded a lot like a motorcycle.

my friends H22a prelude has a definite kick in the ass when VTEC hits. intake and exhaust note completely change and get louder and the car just pulls. The 04 S2K's also have a hard VTEC "kick". our CLS's dont really have that same kick but it definetly helps our cars maintain its power instead of dropping off at high RPM.

Excellent info I didn't know about. I'll add this to the brain bank. Interesting how our cars seem Rev quicker in the VTEC range though, but I guess that is due to the timing change.

It was available in the B16A in the late 80's in JDM cars. It came to the US first in the NSX in 1991 and by the B17A (1992 Integra GS-R).

My buddy's ITR pulls like a mofo when VTEC hits. But in my car, it merely keeps going.

Anyway, it has a bad reputation now because of faggots who go around talking shit -- "Once I hit VTEC, I'll rape your ass."

Lost the race... "Damn, I didn't get into VTEC."

But when they spell it, they usually spell it wrong. They have no fucking clue how VTEC works or the principle necessity behind it, but they just keep talking like they know shit. That's why. I just don't understand the mentality of these "ricers" (truly) going around talking shit to, say, LS1's. That's just retarded.

VTEC is NOT "V-tec", "V-TEC", "V-tech", "V-TECH", "VTECH", "V-TEK", "vtech", "vtec", "vortech", "Vtec", or "Vtech". It's CAPITAL VTEC. No dashes, no lower case, no extra letters, no anything other than the correct and only spelling of VTEC. If you cannot respect the technology and simply use the correct spelling, you do not deserve what it gives you.

Now that i am a Trans Am Owner i can tell you that i do miss the sound of Vtec engaging. To my surprise a lot of F Body guys have respect for the little 4 banger vtec hondas that pull hard. They just hate the guys that overhype vtec like when it kicks in that 160 hp 115 lbs ft tq motor, with exhaust is gonna turn out 350 whp and 250 lbs ft of torque. They just hate shit talking ricers. We have plenty of srt-4's, civics, preludes and other guys on the board that we are cool with because they are not ricers. They are enthusiasts with respect for all cars.

This goes out to all you .
Good job, in clearing things up.

BTW my friend has a 2001 GSR with CAI, headers, and exhaust and when the VTEC kicks in I can feel a significant change in the sound of the engine and in the power being delivered. The car really starts to pull pretty hard. I personally love VTEC that's why my future goals are to buy an S2000 or a new RSX type R.

I love and respect cars, as most of us do. Especially Hondas or Acuras
