Why are there so many used CL Type-S for sale??
First off, I am new to the acura scene. I have nothing but respect for these cars, as my family has owned many of them. Personally, I have owned nothing but mustangs since day one. I am switching out of it for the first time because I am getting an outside sales job and will be commuting quite a bit. I have decided to get a cl-s.
Found a great type-s. '01, 70K miles, white, very clean. While searching for a tl or cl, I came across a LOT of type-s coupes for sale. I was just wondering if this is a trend any of you have seen, and if so, why? Seems like gas mileage isnt the reason. Doesnt seem like mechanical reliability is the issue. Was just curious...
thanks for the input!

the posts in this forum might answer part of that question:
Transmission Recall Forum
because of that ^^^ and because of Acura discontinuing the model, the resale value for these cars is pretty bad, and I'm assuming that people are selling their CL-S to get as much as they can. ALSO, I think it might be because the people who bought the CL-S when it first came out are looking at getting a new car right about now.
I'm just guessing here. I'm not saying that these are the reasons.

Before buying my 01 CLS I owned 3 Mustang GT convertibles. You will really like the switch, especially for a commute. The CLS is more refined and has much better build quality. The engine is made of gold and the transmission is made of glass. You won't have any engine problems, but you will have a transmision issue eventually, so take advantage of the 7 year/100k transmission warranty extended from the factory on all 01 and 02 CLS.

Welcome to the forums...
There are lot of reasons...
It's a coupe... It's a discontined coupe... it's at least 4-6 year old discontinued coupe (I think the 2001 was avail in April 2000?, and the 03's were avail in March/April 2002...
Acura's lease period 39 months IIRC, so even some 03's have come off lease and are now on the used car market...
I kept my last car for over 8 years, but alot of people (especially luxury car buyers) won't keep cars for longer then the typical lease period nowadays...
Even tho I drove my last car (94 V8 Tbird) for 122K miles, I'm still not sure if I'll keep my 6spd for longer then about 70K miles. Dealers can only certify Acuras with under 75K miles, so I've always had in my mind that I'd trade mine in after about 5 years or so...

Welcome to the forum. I think other than the tranny recall, what the Greenmonster said it true. People just don't keep cars as long as they use to. I plan on trading in my CL this year. I really like this car, but I'm going to go back to 4 doors.

CLS 6MT Navi
Agree, the most common CLS is the 01 and they are almost 6 years old. Comparatively few 02s or 03s were sold. I bought a CLS cause I wanted a 6 speed in 03. still nothing comparable to my CLS 6MT out there IMO.

Yeah I don't see many 03 CLS for sale. The only positive thing to them only making our model for 3 years is, you won't see a ton of them around. I go days without seeing a 01-03 CL.

thanks for all of the input!
To answer one of the questions, I am in Los Angeles.
As long as the tranny is covered till 100k, i'm happy. Plus, the car has 73k. on it, so it will be certified, thus, eligible for an extended warranty.
And as one of you said, the cls is MUCH more refined than a mustang. I just loved stangs since day one. The quality difference is night and day. And i need a nice commuter, plus I get the bit of power and sport with the cls.
I guess i was looking a bit too much into it. About the abundance of type-s for sale.
thanks!

The main reason IMHO is that alot of people bout this car new or within a year or two of being new and are now trading up.. I had a 99 tl before my 01 cls.. I had the trans in the 99 tl replaced at 101,000 miles and sod it at 129,000 miles with it being in immaculate shape.. The 01 cls had the transmission line that was the problem replaced before I bought it.. I have had the tranny checked by the acura dealer and an outside source since I bought it. Both said it was in like new shape.. You should take any car you are considering buying to the dealer or an outside source to be inspected before buying. If its checks out fine, you should have no more worries thatn you would buying another car.. The only difference is that you will enjoy this car nore than any other car you've ever owned.. Trust me.. I would know..

thnx willieesco420. i'm buying this car from an acura dealer. it's an '01, so I would assume it has to be in great shape for them to sell it? It will go through the mechanical and safety inspection on tuesday, so if it passes that, all should be good... i hope. the techs are aware of the tranny issue (and im hoping they will inspect it thoroughly).
its white with black interior. i heard thats a rare color combo. pretty happy about how it looks.

I'm piggybacking on what everyone said about the cl. Like every car it has its pro's and cons. With technology moving us forward, everyone wants newest and lastes. Nowadays people don't keep their car no more than 2 years. I had my car a little over a year and I just love it. I turn heads when she nice and clean. I believe with the next couple of years our cars will get the attention the Legend is getting now!

Makes sense. Since I am fairly new to the acura scene, I noticed what I thought was an abnormality, which was more type-s for sale than regular cl. But all makes sense now.
Are there any signs that I should look out for when I see the car on Tuesday? I know ea. car has its own thing-- for instance, on a mustang (GTs), the air silencer is usually removed meaning it was probably driven hard. Or the rear torque boxes are torn a bit. etc. Anything with the type-s I should look out for??
thanks

However for the money, you're right - a CLS-6 is a pretty good deal in terms of "bang for buck".
As for me, I'm selling mine because I want a Z06, and I'm moving too!
It's a cool car, with lots of nice features BUT... I just can't stand the fact that it's FWD and handles like the big 3400lb boat that it is.
Perhaps if I was 40, I'd enjoy the car more. But I'm only 23, and I want a real sports car, not a FWD luxo-coupe!

So, I ended up with a CLS-6 as a replacement. Good bang for the buck and prolly as fast as the G35.

330ci: best in-class overall vehicle IMO
EX V6: not even a luxury sports coupe / not in the same class
Keep in mind that just because you don't like the 330ci and G35, doesn't mean they're not competitors in the entry-level sports luxury coupe class!
The only reason I don't drive either a 330ci or G35 is because their bang/buck wasn't as good as the CL-S, and their overall price is more expensive.
But regardless, they're very worthy competitors, and their success in the marketplace is proof of that.
An Accord EX-V6 is not a sport luxury coupe. Sure it has many of the same features as a CL-S, but from a marketing perspective, it's a family coupe, and Honda doesn't intend for the EX-V6 to compete with a CL-S/G35C/330ci.

As for the 350Z, you're right, no back seats. The 350 is a sports car by definition, and competes in a different segment!

I'm all about the bang for buck
With the new G37c [1] being unveiled next month [2], I might change my opinion
From https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...1&page=9&pp=25
I've got the Lexus IS, BMW 3 series (and Z4 coupe), G37c, and the new Supra on my list of cars that I'm looking to replace my CLS 6spd with... Acura doesn't offer a coupe, so it looks like they aren't going to be on my shopping list...

Infiniti and BMW (and others) seem to give the people what they want, and honda/acura gives the people what honda/acura think they need...
I've always been a non-marque specific guy. If a manufacturer puts out a product that fits my budget, and my wants AND needs, I'll buy it. The CLS fit the bill the last time I was car shopping, but Honda/Acura doesn't have anything in their lineup right now for me
Maybe this will change If it doesn't I might be moving over to a Lexus, Infiniti or BMW...

TQ > MPG
I aint selling mine anytime soon.
Most of the issues people have is with the shitty automatic trans or minor squeaks/rattles. Yeah it doesnt handle like an Evo, but it also rides really nice.
I cant comprehend why so many people on here bitch so much. Did you not test drive the car before you bought it? You know it didnt sprout 500lbs of weight and get shitty tires on the way home.
I think its a great car, and will be looked upon as a great compromise car in years to come. Sure it doesnt handle like a BMW, but it also cost 10k less. Sure it doesnt look as sporty as a G35, but it can be used in 5"+ of snow without getting stuck. Sure its not as fast as an Evo, but it won't fall apart after 10k of normal driving.
Face it guys, its a semi-luxo, semi-sporty, semi-decent handling, conservatively styled Honda coupe. Dont expect it to be anything its not.
I just know I owe $13k on mine, and hopefully for 4-5 yrs after having it paid off I will have no car payments and no large maintenance issues. Thats what smart people do. Dumb people trade cars every 3 yrs, losing their ass in a sea of negative equity fueled by immature 'i gotta have the new thing' way of thinking.

Joe, you're right, it is a great compromise car... and that's exactly why I bought it... I was looking at Porsche 993's, but figured I'd buy something new and practical...
The longer I drive it, the more I appreciate it... I really might keep mine for longer then I thought... It has been paid off for awhile now, so it's making me money...
I had my last car for over 8 years, and 136K miles... Bought that one used (w/ 14K miles), and will probably look for a low mileage used car when the time comes to replace my CL.
