Why not Surround Sound THX or 5.1 Dolby in a CLS?

Why the car makers, BOSE or whoever do not make a stock surround sound setup THX or 5.1 Dolby?

A car is the ideal place to have a surround sound setup

Left, right, center, rear left and and rear right and a sub....

Also why not.... DVD audio and XM streaming Digital Dolby 5.1 streams would cool...

Give it like 6 years...We just recently got CD players as a standard, and 6-8 speakers, If mini-discs had popularity we would see them too.It wasn't but like 10-12 yrs ago we had tape cassettes and 4 speaker setups in most production cars(not aftermarket of course). Technology is quick, but my car still won't fly or even hover for that matter

And isn't THX rights owned by George Lucas, they would have to pay him for use of his setup and name, unless they could develop one of their own.

Way too many reflections for any good audio reproduction in a car. From a purists point of view. Car audio has come a long way, but it's no where near home or studio stuff.

----- snip ---- snip ----- snip ------

My .02c on car audio, and all of the misunderstood things about it

Without a capacitor the max WATTS you can achieve ***sustained*** is about 176 with 12 volts at fairly standard AMPs (factory alternator)... do the math. The rest is just advertising... 1000watts! for .0001 of second.. LOL

Lets start with just pure fuses...

Ampfuse= ammount of amps the fuses will hold
13 Volts x AmpFuse = RAW watts

13volts X 20amp = 260 RAW watts

So if you see some 500watt amp with a 20amp fuse... ummm NO I dont think so.

Voltage x Amperage x Efficiency = Peak Watts

We'll use a 60AMP fused amp for example... (my phoenix gold)

Since the average amplifier is about 50% efficient, meaning it loses half of all the power it can make to heat, we can calculate for my ZX500 amp...

13 volts x 60 amps x 50% efficiency (.5) = 390 peak watts

Wait then lets add in RMS!

Voltage x Amperage x Efficiency x .707 = Watts RMS

13 volts x 60 amps x 50% efficiency (.5) x .707 = 275.73 watts RMS

LOL, yes you have been had! Granted most amp will *peak* at high voltages/watts... you also have to ask what class AMP are they? A B or C? LOL or even D who cares if you have a 1000watt class D amp...

Class A in a car! (yes there are a few, but very low output) no... Class B or C more than likely.

If you wanted to actually produce the true 800 watts, in my amplifier, according to our equation, would have to draw nearly 174 amps from you car at 13 volts! Since the average alternator only produces between 80 to 100 amps, this could be a serious problem, requiring hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars in batteries, caps, and electrical upgrades. Numbers never lie, folks. You can lie about the numbers, but the numbers never lie.

I'd spend you money on home stuff ;-)

5.1 is for movies ain't it? and 90% of the people who drive only listen to the radio/cd no need for surround sound when its not needed. JMO

very true .... the 5.1 in my car is for my DVD player. There is no reason to have it with CD's. I mean, the CL is not a family car but more a personal car. 5.1 will make it int minivans much quicker than our cars.

with my Dell THX system, when i play music, all 5 speakers play at the same capacity...the Dolby ProLogic stock systems in the Volvo's are pretty interesting since there is a clear distinction between what u hear out of the center speaker and the surround sound out of the side speakers.
