Why does the NSX have a gas guzzler tax?
Why does the NSX have a gas guzzler tax?
I happened to be on the Acura site and noticed that there is a $1200 gas guzzler tax on the NSX, yet it is listed at 17mpg city and 24mpg hwy.
What gives? That's better than many cars out there.

the luxury tax for cars was eliminated as of 12/31/02 (irc section 4001(g)). so it wouldn't be the luxury tax.
the problem with it being a gas guzzler tax is that the gas guzzler tax is assessed in fixed dollar amounts based on average fuel economy. the current levels under irc section 4064(a) are:
avg. mpg. tax
>22.5 $0
21.5-22.4 $1000
20.5-21.4 $1300
19.5-20.4 $1700
18.5-19.4 $2100
17.5-18.4 $2600
16.5-17.4 $3000
15.5-16.4 $3700
14.5-15.4 $4500
13.5-14.4 $5400
12.5-13.4 $6400
<12.4 $7700
a $1200 gas guzzler tax has not been an option since 1985 (it was for cars averaging between 16 and 17 mpg back then).
so I doubt it is a gas guzzler tax, either (unless the amount cited was misreported somehow).

Hmmmm. All I know is that it said $1200 gas-guzzler tax.
Then, when I went back to verify that, the Acura site had changed and I could not longer get to that page.
What gives?
