Why does an AT E36 M3 Sedan walk me?

Holy shit I feel bad. I spent and hour last night racing my friend in his STOCK (well he has S03's) '99 (automatic) M3 sedan with 90k mi. I was in my STOCK 01 CL-S with 45k. With his fat tires he always got the jump, but not by much. I tried shifting many diff ways but every time we got to 80 mph I was at his rear bumper. From what I read on here, I should def beat him, no? Someone tell me why I am such a failure...

check the hp to weight ratio. Get headers and you'll own him.

I thought of that too (they're REALLY heavy - in a bandpass box w/ plexiglass) but I didn't think they would make so much of a difference. Well I might have to pull em and go for another run.. I'm hoping that'll solve the problem!

Take some of the weight you got on the back, get some CAI, and headers.. You will def give him a run for his money.

P.S. I just easily whooped an E36 M3 not to long ago, it's a blue one and it's stick.. Gotta love AWD and boost.

since Rp's is an automatic, might as well ask: is gate-shifting quicker than flooring it?

power to weight Ratio he wins. Plus, I think BMW AT's are more efficient and lose less HP to the wheels.

Try playing with your launch .. brake torque to about 2000 rpms.. and then feather the throttle at the launch until you feel some grip .. then floor it .. gate shift every gear.

I think the consensus is that the AT M3 and the CL-S are EQUAL to one another in straightline performance from a roll ... NOT from a stop simply b/c the RWD to FWD factor.

Shave some weight, get some headers and an intake.. and you'll own him for sure. $325.00 gets you OBX headers

lol scott you're hilarious... (we're friends from school)

i calculated power/weight for both and they were almost exactly equal (m3 sedan is heavier than coupe)

i pulled my subs, spare, jack, amp, and all the tools i had in my trunk. i even weighed it all: 115 lbs!
(I drove it to soccer practice and i could def feel weight difference, especially when braking... or was it my imagination?)

headers are the next thing on my list...

did i respond to everyone?

o ya and scott - you don't need my subs... you're already slow enough

j/k

Gotta get headers, keep an eye on Black Market, as guys are trading they are parting out their cars, stick with Comptech if you can

i agree w/Red Rider about the comptechs. I love mine and would NEVER buy OBX because of quality issues.

I truly would, but I don't have the money right now. And when they eventually do fail (~2 yrs?) I'll have the money for comptechs by then. The ebay seller with new OBX for $300 is letting me pick up in SF. For me, $300 is worth 25 hp for ~2 years.

damn! he's still a little faster (and he has spare tire+other shit like airsoft guns+ammo in the back)
Then again, we only had like 2 runs and neither were real good. We were too busy playing with scott's new dv cam and racing 'out of our league' cars (see http://www.acura-cl.com/forums/showt...hreadid=121128).

I was also in D3 the whole time, didn't get the time to try to gate shift or SS.

I did pull on him though when Scott was in his passenger seat...

Right now I am waiting for a paycheck for the web design i did a while back - then I can run up to SF and pick up some new OBX for $290!! and please dont flame on the obx... by the time these break i'll have the money for comptechs...
[I'll beat the M3 then for sure!]

My good friend has a 97 M3 auto and I will beat him in any type of race. From a stop he will get the jump but by 30 I walk by him with ease. On the highway its a little closer, one time we ran from a 70 to 130 and I beat him by about 2 cars. BTW I do have headers, pick up a set and that M3 will be a distant memory.

My friend has a 98 M3 4-door auto, and we race all the time. He has an AC shnitzer exhaust and I WALK HIM. We're even till about 50, and then I walk him all the way till 110.

I guess some cars come out of the factory quicker than others!!

it's been awhile since i raced him, but i finally have some hosting and i took the time to upload a couple vids (they're not too big).

scott is holding the camera, and he's passenger to jon in the m3

the first is just one part of the compilation that Jon (the m3 driver) made: http://geocities.com/pechler@pacbell.net/cls/cls.mov

this second file includes the clip that is in the first file: http://geocities.com/pechler@pacbell...ls/clslong.mov
