Why do they try? Older Grand Prix...

On the way home tonight, I was on the phone with Bulldog01. I am looking in the rear view mirror and I see a later model (late 90's???) Grand Prix weaving through traffic. I keep my eye on him for a bit and then as he pulls up I can tell he wants to play. He looks over with his shades on and one hand out the window with a cigarette and when he sees me looking he makes this dramatic motion of tossing his cigarette. Fortunately it wasn't at me or I would have been mad. I tell Bulldog01 who was still on the phone that I have a Grand Prix that wants to play and he immediately lets me go. Thanks Pete.

Anyhow, to make along story short, it wasn't faster than me and we played for a bit as traffic allowed. It was more a race against a @#$%head of a driver who thought he was too cool. It had some "go" so I can't bad mouth it too bad but above 90mph he had NNNOOOOOO pull.

Not suprising...just sharing.

uh oh, I see another CLs vs GTP thread coming on. LOL

I hate it when drivers think they are tool cool, doesn't matter what kind of car they drive. Too bad you guys had trafic to deal with, it could have been a good match up.

oh, my GS has some pull at 90+.

I didn't see any GTP badges on the side so I don't think it was a GTP. It was more of a smack down race than anything else. I like the Grand Prix. I don't know how reliable they are but I had one as a rental a while back and I liked it.

The new GTPs should be pretty interesting...they sound fast on paper.

That was sooooo funny to me. That happened to me years back and it reminded me of it. It's like he thought he was in a movie or music video or something.

Reliable, very. The motor was built for boost and if you keep it stock the tranny will take what you give it. Most issues are from poor maintenance and modding.

I see you're from Mass. do you go to the track often?

Never been to the track. I have only had my car since last November and I do plan to go some time...just haven't made it there yet. You are from Mass as well?

Yeah..."thought he was in a movie or music video" is a good way to put it. When I got home and told my fiance' about it I told her that the guy thought that he was in a John Woo movie or something...all we needed was a slow-motion effect and he would have been all set! At least I didn't lose to him, that would have just kicked his ego up another notch!

I'm from Connecticut. However I know of a group of GTPs from here and Mass that go to the track from time to time. I was wondering what kind times you run. With a CAI and Headers I'm guessing in the 14.3-14.2 range for a 6spd with a good launch.

I don't have a 6speed since this car is primarily for commuting back and forth into Boston with every day...I figured that sport shift was the best of both worlds even if it is a but slower. I'd be happy with mid 14s when I get to the track. With my mods that seems possible.

if it indeed wasnt a GTP, theres nothing the grand prix could do to hang with you, however a very mildly modded GTP will hand you your ass all day. ill never forget watching my buddy run 14.5 all day in a STOCK 98 GTP....and see a gathering of other GTP's run 12 second runs all day.

Hey Jim, I guess you've been away from the GPs for a while, there is now at least one(probably a few more) NA GT in the 13s, and a ton in the mid 14s. Then of course there are the CSC blown ones in the 12s. There are two GTs in my club that are consistent high 14s, but they have added a few more mods since their last runs, and I suspect at least one of them is running mid 14s now. The more highly modded GTs are a good run for a mildly modded CLS, the advantage is still with the CLS, but not by very much. It would probably boil down to a drivers race.
