Not on the CL, but I have had them replaced before on other cars. Most are in the $800-$1200 range. All the cost is labor. Hours of it.

If you are going to drive the car past 105k, there is nothing to gain by putting it off. If you want to do it now, I'd do it. The only way you lose is if you sell or total the car in the next 10k.

Price sounds right, $800 what it costs in Texas with a water pump.

Just got off phone w/ svc mgr again--he stressed it doesn't need to be done till 105K. I said if it goes before then, "I'm holding your ass responsible." Silence. "Ummm, maybe you will want to do it sooner, y'know, whatever makes you feel better." Yup, I'll hold out for 5K then it gets done for sure.

I'm a little worried about this too since mine is at 81k. I've had it done to another car and afterwards it pinged like crazy and had less power. They must have not lined up the cam and crankshaft teeth properly. We sold the car soon afterwards. Another freind had it done to her pathfinder, at the dealer, and similar results. Never ran the same. I dont think these guys are careful about lining up the cam and crank marks. This is critical to the process. Tell them when you have it done that you are worried about this and want someone who is careful about it and that you'll be back if it isnt right.

On my Gen II Legend Coupe I paid about 800 dollars to have the dealer replace it at the suggested 90,000-mile mark.
The price DID include a new water pump as well because it’s driven off the same idler and Acura recommends replacing them both at the same time.
They said if you just replaced the belt it would burn up the old pump and you’d be back in the shop a couple hundred miles later.

I don’t know if it’s a similar design for the CL & TL 3.2 engine or if they changed that.

the life of the belt is more based on actual years, not mileage. A guy on the TL site fsttyms1 (PM him for lots of good info) has 180+k on his 2000 TL with the original timing belt. Now that is pushing it, but the 105k mark, is just a reference point - not a 100% thing. But it will need to be replaced, so if you are going to keep it for a while longer, get it replaced (with the water pump). and the $800 price is normal.

I don't know that a new belt would automatically kill the pump within a few hundred miles, but the water pump needs to be removed to replace the belt so you might as well replace the pump with a new one while you've got it off.

Where did you get the info that belts life is base on actual years and not mileage?
Our T.Belt is very well made and I have not seen one break, but on older integra belts breaks at around 70K-90k miles. If belts breaks, 99% of the time you will need a valve jobs, that will cost $2k.

Which is precisely what I aim to avoid. I want to keep this car for at least another year or so and it's paid for so it's maintenance time.

So if TIME is more important then mileage, what is the maximum YEARS one should go on the OEM belt?
You think mine would last for 10-Years?

Shawn S… Who only drives 9-10K a year.

It depends on a car, on some cars if it breaks it might cause a severe damage, while on others if it breaks your car will just need to be towed, and they will put a new one.
Does anyone know what type of belt do we have?

Most modern cars with their high compression will bend valves once the T.Belt breaks. I have seen Accord, NSX, TL, CL , MDX and etc bending valves when the belt jump tooth or break.

because its obvious first of all - the belt is rubber (basically) and rubber deteriorates with age/weathering and that takes time. Like when tires on the trailer that you never move dry rot with only 100 miles on them - time and the elements get them. Same for the belt - now yes mileage will have an effect, Im just saying that isnt a 100% rule you have to follow - but like some have said and myself also, if you plan to keep your car for a long time 150k+, then you might as well get it done sometime around the 105k mile mark because it will need to be done sometime anyway.

Dont you get a warrning sign when it needs to be replaced? Like some odd sound or a good mechanic can suggest a replacement based on visual inspection?
Or its completly undetected?

Did a T Belt on a Nissan lately.

Even the parts alone are not so cheap. Just did an old Nissan V6 myself. Just below $250 in parts alone including WP, T Belt, Tensioner, Thermostat, hoses. With a discount using Nissan parts. Could have spent even more by replacing the external belts, but changed those 1 yr ago.
Hope my Honda will not cost $1200 to get the job done by a mechanic.

I went to my mechanic (not an Acura specific mechanic, but still very good) and said he would do mine for $395. I know he's not an Acura tech, but he does very good work (he's done everything I've needed done on all of my cars since I was 16) I would trust him to get it done.
he said it would take about 3-3.5 hours to get it done. I have 80K on the car now and was going to get it done a couple of months ago, but he suggested that I wait until 100K to get it done. However, I will not have the car that much longer.

My car is in right now for the timing belt replacement. I'm having the water pump and all exterior belts replaced as well. $685 for the whole package. They found a problem with the timing belt tensioner and are replacing it. My car just went over 111k miles and has only been to the shop for oil changes and a transmission at 65k. I'm also having the radiator and transmission flushed and filled.

Does anyone have access to the TSB on the timing belt tensioner? They apparently had Safety recalls on the '03 CLs but I never got anything on my 02.

also think about having them replace the upper and low radiator hoses they are cheap but if they break your in trouble, its cheap insurance.

It totally depends on if its a Interference motor or not. Some cars even with high compression dont bend valves. The honda B16 and B18 engines for example are high compression but are non interference so usually it says it in the owners manual what kind of engine it is and if the valves will get bent.

Wow $685, how did you get it for that price!

That's an awsome deal...I have 114K miles on my 01 CLS, time to get the timming belt service done. Anyone in the North TX area know who has the best deal?

i have 86xxx miles on my car and i went to my local acura dealership to get all the external belts and waterpump replaced just a couple days ago. basically, the 105,000 mile service. there are 2 dealerships in jacksonville and one for some reason, is always more expensive than the other....no idea why. but anyways. i of course, went to the less expensive one. the complete 105,000 mile service including all belts being replaced, waterpump, and spark plugs was 1,200. i opted to exclude the replacement of the spark plugs because that service added an additional 300 dollars! thats a ridiculous price to replace em imo. so with my belts and waterpump replaced i paid $700ish. oh and it took from 8am-5pm. and they gave me a 04 tl as a loaner car
