Question Wheel Lock Question

Is it true that the wheel lock keys are pretty much universal? Do two sets of wheel locks for the same make and model car have the same exact key?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Facto...spagenameZWDVW

I was browsing for wheel locks and saw this guy on ebay selling just the key and sayin it works for pretty much all acuras. If thats the case, wheel locks are definitely not worth the $50 brand new price.

They're not all the same but there's not a lot of combinations out there. If I remeber correctly, there are around 6 different keys.

I thought so too, but there are like 6 ...different colors for each type...Honda has like 10 or 12...I thought when I lost my wheel lock I could cruise to the Honda dealership to get a new one because it is only 45 min away but I ended up having to drive the two hours to the acura dealership instead...

Yup, I believe it is 8 different locks. Each one is color coded. And there are occasionally master lock key sets on ebay for sale. Kinda scary.

Although a can of freon, a cold chisel, and a 5lb sledge will make quick work of the McGard wheel locks.

Hmm...sounds like you know this by experience, lol. How much can the freon lower the temperature of the wheel lock?

No, there was a story on Dateline a few years ago and they did the same thing with The Club.

Beating the Club
The Club may be hardened steel, but the steering wheel it clings to is probably plastic, which thieves can hacksaw through in less time, slipping The Club off intact. Another favorite Club-buster: a can of freon. “You spray it into the lock cylinder for two minutes, which makes it brittle,” says Heinhold. “Then, with a workman’s hammer, you take a good swing at the lock cylinder and it shatters.
