What the Weight of Our CLS Rims?

Whats the weight of our stock CLS rims without the tyres mounted?

Also what is the largest rim that would fit on our CLSs. I know that it is 19" and that 20"s won't fit. But what is the widest that we can go? And what is the widest that the tyre can go?

Tnx

Yea teh highest that I heard that we can go is 19". Now all I need to know is how wide of a rim and tyre can we use.

Try doing a search. One big factor is springs..

Springs? In terms of....? Do u mean clearance? Yea that is true. Bu tis there something that can be done to offset the rim alittle to give alittle more clearance? I know that having on/off setted rims is very stress full on the suspension. But what could aftermarket suspension kits do for us? Also what would a camber kit do as well.

Tnx

There are a couple ways you can do to create some clearance for your 19" rims. First and foremost is the offset. A high offset will spare you the trouble of rubbing. If you can't do that, then rolling the fender will allow you some clearance.

As for aftermarket suspension kits, and I am assuming you're talking about Coilovers, these will allow you to adjsut the height and dampening characteristics of your suspension, while allowing almost stock ride. This will also allow you to adust the height so that you can minimize rubbing in certain cases.

Camber kits will allow you to bring your camber back to factory specs for better tire wear. You can also use these to create negative cambers to the point that your tires will tuck under the wheel well, thus acheiving clearance of rubbing issues...hehehe.

About the camber kits, what kinda strain do they put on the suspension?

Even with a camber kit and a higher offset could it be possible to run on 20"?

2001 CLS 17x7" rims are 25.8 (early search by a member with a digital scale) to 26.5 (Chod's FAQ) and Jens got a reading around 26+ lbs.

The 2003 rims are lighter (ask Shawn).

Hey, anyone want to cut up an old worn out Michelin MXM4 to find the weight of the outermost 1/2" (just the tread) vs. the two sidewalls (as a family project) ???

It would be helpful to figure out the effects of wheel weight and diameter changes…

Yes.... done, works, no problems (offset near 50-52 helps) when car has some 2" lowering.

That might be a worthwhile calculation to sit down and do one of these days. I've wondered the exact effects of change in rim weight and radius myself.
I guess you have to make an initial assumption about the weight distribution of your average rim. Most of the weight certainly is concentrated around the outer rim and not the spokes, but still, what is a good assumption given the fact that the more spokes you have, the more evenly the weight is distributed around the entire rim. Less spokes, more % of weight on the outer part of the rim. And of course, weight distribution of the rim affects its inertia and ultimately the results of your calculations.
Hrrm, the mind wobbles . .

Oh my god, are they really that much!? I guess I may have to add wheels to one of my first mods! Get some lighter wheels and decent tires and that alone may put me in the 13's

OK cool I got the confirmation that 19" will fit and it works with an offset of 50-52.

But what is the widest rim + tyre that we can go? Plz rate the tyre in mm.

Tnx

I believe 8" width on rims with the appropriate offset and 245mm tires.

Would spacers allow us to run wider tyres? If so do spacers place a serious strain on the suspension?

Actually, spacers will cause your rims to stick out further than intended, thus your wide tires will rub! Don't do it.

Ok but as for adding spacers to the rear would be ok. Spacers wouldn't desrupt the offset enough to stress the suspension right?

Consider your rims/tires wisely. I would say look for a light weight 18x7.5 or 18x8 rims with a wieght between a low 13 lbs and a max of 23 lbs. 18 lbs is good for an 18". Look for an offset of +43-+45! and my +45 are perfect, No rubbing.

Then get some 235/40/18 Toyo TS-1 and you are a happy camper! Or better some S0-3.

And do not do the 19" unless you are going with 235/35/19 and a very light weight rim like 15 lbs or so..... Those 19" are damn expensive some $400 per rim.

Good luck.

No, spacers will not disrupt the offset enough to put stress on the suspension, but why would you want to do that?

I do like the look of spaced out tyres. And I would think that wide spaced out rims would look tight.

You would want to keep an eye on the offset of the combination. AS you move away from +55, the torque steer is going to get worse...

http://www.acura-cl.com/forums/showt...ghlight=weight

Shawn weighed his 2003 tire+wheel and got 48lbs.

2001 Tire and Wheel is 52 (close enough).

2003 wheels are approx. 4 lbs lighter.
