What Other Cars Did You Consider Before You Bought Your CL?
What other cars did you consider before you bought your CL? I am just interested in the demographics of CL Type S buyers. Also, what did you think of those specific models.

Safety Car
We were inches away from buying a z3, but because the salesman was an asshole, we didnt. Turned out it was the best thing he could do, since Im driving a cls now
Also though about 325 ci, audi a4

I walked in to my Acura dealer looking for a Silver CLS with a spoiler....it was right on the showroom floor!!! I didn't consider ANYTHING but an Acura after having 3 Integras that I loved.

Where is my super sauce?
BMW 330
Volvo Coupe (cannot remember #)
Saab Viggen Coupe
Lexus SC (could not afford)
Considered Audi, Lexus, Jaguar, Infiniti, but all had four doors! Yuck!

540i - no availability and disinterested salesman
Lincoln LS - nice car but no nav and less HP than CL-S
IS 300 - too small.
Audi TT - should have driven an S4, would have been an interesting decision....
Lexus GS - pretty nice, but lots of money and already had a Lexus.
Chrysler 300 - what was I thinking? Oh yeah, C&D liked it....

- WRX
- Maxima
- S2000
Didn't go with the WRX b/c I was spoiled with the luxury of my CL. If the WRX had at least leather, I probably would have gotten it.
Didn't go with the Max b/c I knew the new one was coming out, but that that time no one was sure of any cosmetic changes, so I didn't wait. Plus, when you compare the two, the TL-S is the better deal.
Didn't go with the S2000 b/c my arguement for getting another new car was that I needed 4 doors for clients, etc. This one lost first .

Max SE- great power, not the refinement i was looking for (a very close 2nd)
GTP- cheesy plastic but good power throughout the range (SC)
Eclipse GT - no power and less of a back seat than the CL
Mustang GT - no lux at all... cheap feeling interior, great power
MonteCarlo SS - all around cheap feeling
Seabring LXi - not enough power
325xi and 330ci - 325 not enough power, 330 too much w/ options
IS300 - GREAT fit and finish... not enough power for the $$
C230 - nice feel, nice interior, NO power
GSR- too small
GT-S- same as gsr
USED 93' NSX- breaks worn out, lots of miles, no power steering, 40g's
A4 - same as 325
VW Passat - no power
TL (non S)- spoiled by CL-S power
Im sure there are more but that is all I can think of right now.

Find beauty in dissonance
325Ci 5-speed - nice, but I'd put too many miles on it, could not wait 2 months for a car
Maxima 20th AE 5-speed - a few hundred less, but far less features
WRX - AWD, fast, not much else to it, at the time paying MSRP? ha-ha!

I looked at a 3 series, couldn't justify the amonut of $$$$ for no options...
Briefly looked at an Accord V6 Coupe... Couldn't see spending $27K on that
Then it was between an 02 Maxima SE & the CL-S. My biggest question was 2 or 4 door. The TL-S wasn't quite out yet.. I decided on 2 door, so went with the CL-S

330i
M3 hatch
Maxima SE
Altima
is300
RSX-S
When I went to check out the RSX, I saw the CL and bought it on the spot. My girl said the RSX was something she could see herself in and that turned me off right away Plus, the CL just drove better and it was a lot less money.

Celica GT-S - too small
MR2 Spyder - ditto + dealter mark-up
RSX-S - couldnt wait two months to get it
Integra GSR - small..... everyone has one
Eclipse GT - decent car..... not enough sportyness for me
Subaru WRX - could not wait two months without a car
Camaro SS - fast as all fuck..... crappy design of the car.. esp the catalytic converter placement
Mustang GT - cheap inside, purpose built
the first generation CL caught me for some reason..... liked the styling, good build quality, and couldnt afford the CL-S

1) Infiniti QX4
2) BMW 330ci
3) Volvo C70
4) Toyota 4Runner Limited
The reason I ended up buying the CLS with navi is because my local Infiniti dealer couldn't locate a silver QX4 with navi and all the options within a 2 day period.. Plus, Napleton Acura in Elmhurst IL gave me an offer I couldn't refuse!!

I never test drove anything other than the CL-S. I was in love. I wanted to drive a RSX-S, but they didn't have any. So the dealer gave me the car for a little more than sticker on the RSX-S. I have been in love ever since.

330Ci - Too expensive
IS 300 - Too Slow and the interior is GHEY!!!
A4 2.8 - Awesome car, but a bit pricey
S2000 - Loved the car, but I needed some sort of a trunk and backseat
C230 - Mercedes let me down. Wasn't impressed at all.

List is pretty much the same as others here. I wanted a luxury sports sedan and I needed to move up to 4 door automatic.
Audi A4 2.8 - almost bought it until I read a review on the Acuras
Lexus IS300 - too small - would have been a fun car though
BMW 330 - way too expensive optioned out
VW Passat - GLX pricing is up there

SO many cars I test drove:
Camaro SS
Grand Prix GTP
Grand Am GT1
Accord EX-V6
Prelude
Passat
Jetta
A4
Maxima SE
Probably a couple other things I can't remember.
Basically everything under $30k sticker, even GM crap with their shitty interiors (this experience was when I learned just how crappy the interiors have gotten).

The only other car i was seriously interested in was the A4. Then i test drove it, end of story. It was almost 2 years ago and there was nothing close to 260hp for under 30k loaded at that time. Still very happy.

Great thread!
We looked at many cars over many months:
In order....
BMW 528 (1998/1999) - couldn't find the colour/mileage we wanted
BMW 540 (1998/1999) - as soon as we tried this, he wasn't interested in the 528 any more LOL
Mercedes CLK 320 (1998/1999) - I thought a 4 door would be more practical
Jaguar X-type (new) - can you say Ford? It felt like we were driving an American car
BMW 530i (new) - over $70,000 Canadian once options added
Mercedes CLK 320 (new) - over $70,000 new
(notice how the cars were getting more and more expensive???)
We hated the look of the Lexus, and had a problem Audi in the past.
Then we happened to look at the CL-S and for less than $40,000 Canadian we had a brand new car.
It was a pretty easy decision and this board was extremely helpful.
