We can only get 91 in CA. I got cheap and put 89 in it when gas was over $2.00 (I know, it only saves $2.00 per tank) and it runs the same in normal to mildly spirited driving. I suspect that it may have slightly less power at full throttle, but no pinging.

93 Most of the time (usually Mobil or Amoco, now BP)......94 if I happen to be at a Sunoco.
Once local Sunoco has 100 Octane racing fuel. I had put it in my Audi A6 a few times, but that was when gas was cheap (94 was $1.20-$1.30.....the 100 was $2.49......now the 100 is around $5/gallon!)

High octane gas is for high compression and forced induction. All high octane gas does is make it so that the gas combusts at the very top of the chamber. High octane gas is to prevent premature combustion due to the high temperatures in the chamber. I use the premium because it gets better gas mileage and is cleaner burning. However, it is not necessary. The difference in power that you can 'feel' is really all in our minds. I’m switching to mid grade. In actuality i should be using 87, because that’s what the book calls for. Acura’s like the nsx, mdx, and the second gen cl, to name a few, require 92 or higher it says so in the manual. Putting higher octane in say a first gen cl that is normally aspirating will not gain any more power, in fact too high octane can cause the gas not to combust at the right time and throw off the internal combustion causing the car to drive hard and even possibly bend or break a piston or valve. so in other words use what the book calls for, the guys in japan know what they're talking about.. they made the car.

Very simple...if your Element says to feed it 89 then feed it 89.
I give my car premium to get the "performace" that is promised. MY Civic wanted @ss gas...89. THe Prelude needed 93 to get it's 200hp (stock).....I believe that the CL drives better on sweet gas. The Element must be made to play on cheap...89oct...feed it what the book says...
