What does your tachometer say when you cruising...
My CL's tach loafs around 1700RPM at 60MPH, and when the cars goes at 80MPH, the tacho jumps to 2300 RPM.
Couple of day ago, I got the 04 TL as loaner car. I guess TL got more HP and torque, or even the gear ratio is also different. That TL's stayed around 1400 at 60MPH, and 2000RPM at 80MPH.
Hmmm... does 04 TL actualy have better MPG than our 01 CLS?

For me i'm @ 2000RPM =70mph
Speaking of RPMs/MPG and crusing etc.... with staying around 70-80mph was able to get 400miles this weekend on a full tank and still have enough fuel for about another 50+ miles, which makes me wonder how close i could get to 500miles on a full tank.
I post a picture later of how much i had left when i hit 400miles.

I think the major difference in the TL is the drivetrain... maybe 5th gear is even taller.
It seems as though @ 80 mph exactly, if the CL is doing 2400rpm and the TL is doing 2000, then the TL has better mileage. The power difference is negligible at 10 hp and 6 lb/ft.

Don't forget weight as a factor:
Assuming both are 5AT... if both the CL and TL weigh about 3400 each and say the CL has only the driver on board and the TL has 5 on board, which engine will work harder (i.e. consume more fuel) at highway speeds in 5th gear to maintain a steady speed? A similar analogy would be two Chevy Silverados with only the driver on board. Both trucks have the same V8... but one is towing 5000 pounds. Obviously both will have the same top gear rpm, but which one's getting better mileage?

Ummmmmmmmm, NO-how fast does a S2000 spin? and it certainly gets better gas mileage than the CL

besides, S2K does not have better MPG than our CLS.

2.7k-2.9K RPM sound more like it, and you don't count as you have a 6 Speed with boost.
I get terrible gas mileage with my S2000, maybe because the engine is still new (only 2500 miles) or maybe because I drive it too hard
... Not only that, but the gearing isn't setup for highway cruising, so in 6th gear @ 80mph, the engine is humming along at around 3500-4000rpms, (don't remember exactly). Compare that to the TL-S which whispers at about 2400rpms @ 80mph, and you've not only got better gas mileage in the TL-S, but you've also got a much nicer ride. I love driving the S2000, but personally I wouldn't take it on long trips... The TL is much better suited for that.
I don't have the numbers in front of me, but I would imagine that the 5AT '04 TL has a taller 5th gear to allow for the 2000rpms @ 80mph cruising speed. Actually, now that I think about it ... horsepower/torque has nothing to do with how fast you go at a particular rpm. Gearing has everything to do with that ... Consider as you mod your car, you've got more horsepower/torque, but you still go the same speed at a given rpm and gear. Horsepower/torque just help you accelerate faster to a given rpm/gear/speed combination.

Oh yeah, the tire/rim combo can effect your rpms too since it effectively changes the final gear ratio. I know the TL comes with 17x8" rims with 235/45/17s on the tires. That could also effect your speed at a given rpm

Mine is at just under 2500 RPM at 80 mph, '03 TL-S (keep in mind that if you have a Premium model, the gear ratios are different from the Type-S, and you will have different RPM at given speeds).
i'm lazy mclaren, too many zeros to type. Now you made me make another post. you're killing me bro.
Anyway, I cruise at the same RPM as all the other 6 speeders. obviously my gas milage sucks, but it's not horrible. On a good day of high way driving I can prob pull 300 easily out of 14 gallons. I normally fill up a bit after the light comes on. I could prob get 350 if I didn't pass anyone.

your comparing honda's top convertible roadster to a touring sedan .. obviously the sedan is going to be a much more comfortable trip taker. But I certainly would rather the S2k on a spirited drive with twisty roads
the S2000 is setup for speed and very spirited driving .. very tight steering and suspension, I'm sure it was never intended to be a car to take on long trips .. nor could you really fit any amount of luggage for any kind of trip
oh and the s2k reminds me of my friends 97 prelude w\ H22 .. the H22 tranny revs REALLY high even in 5th, it feels similiar to 4th in the 5AT. I remember his car revving at like 4000+ RPM at like 80 .. I was like

The S2000 is definitely more fun imho than the TL-S could ever be though
